There are many many variables - the weather/ humidity, level of activity, even how much fiber and carbs you have eaten can affect how much you "should" drink.
I tend to think of those two numbers as a min and max range that I stay within. Most days I end up between 10 and 12 cups (80-96 oz). I have gone as high as 16-18, but I get stomach cramps if I do that several days in a row. You just have to experiment and see what works for you. For the first week or two after you start drinking more you will feel like you live in the bathroom, but you adjust.
