I have discovered that anytime I eat something that is loaded w/sodium, I can see as much as a 2-3 lb gain on the scale. Yes, the day after I "eated it"
This is unlikeable.
I love salt but I really don't go overboard with it. I'm beginning to wonder if my system is really THAT sensitive. How utterly annoying.
This TOTALLY happens to me too. The last two Sundays, I ate a bunch of Doritos while watching football--not amazing nutrition, I know, but I made the calories fit under my cap. Both times on the very next day, I was up between 2 and 3 lbs.
This is very apparent since I graph my weight loss, and really have a salt tooth. Almost everyone of my spikes upward have to do with salty foods. It's not real weight gain, since I can't gain 3 lbs over night, especially when I'm eating at a deficit. It's just friggin' salt. It eventually comes off, but not as quickly as it comes on. Doh.
Oh yes, I've definitely noticed this. I gain anywhere from 2-5 pounds the day after a high sodium meal. I just drink lots of water & in a day or two the weight is back down.
That happens to me all the time, mostly with pizza. Or anything with cheese. It sucks but it comes down a couple days later, I usually try and avoid weighing in right after because it depresses me more than anything, so I drink more water and weigh in a couple days later.
Trust me the first time I saw it I nearly fainted. But now I came to terms with it.
Good luck with your remaining weight loss ladies, we have the same goal weight I just am trailing far behind you guys! haha
Ultimately, nobody cares about the actual number on the scale - what we care about is how we look and feel (aka body fat %). Unless you've eaten at least an extra 7000-10000 calories (unlikely!) the last couple days, you know that weight *has* to be from either water or lean tissue gain (also unlikely to gain lean tissue that quickly). So that pretty effectively narrows it down to just water. And we don't care about water! So as long as you didn't gain fat (and it's pretty impossible for you to have gained fat), it doesn't really matter what the number is.
At least for me, dissociating a little bit from the number game helps me keep focused and on track.
I don't think your system is particularly sensitive, I think most people experience a gain like that after eating salty foods. It's just that when you are paying a lot of attention and esp. if you are a daily weigher, you are gong to notice it more than someone else who isn't paying that level of attention.
But you should also be noticing that it comes off again within a few days, too, as long as it was just the salt and not something that was also loaded with lots of fat and calories!
I've noticed the same reaction in myself. It's frustrating and the first time I saw a spike like that I nearly came unglued. Now I know if I eat out somewhere - even perfectly on plan for me - I'm going to gain at least 3 pounds from the excess sodium. If the food is really salty then forget about it, I bloat up like a sea cow!
The good news is that it's just water weight and it will come off relatively quickly. I just make sure to drink plenty of water after a salt binge to flush my system out a bit.
I have the same problem. I always gain a few pounds after a sodium packed meal. I always avoid the scale for a few days afterwards and drink tons of water. Its too discouraging if I don't.
Yep, same thing here. Even air-popped popcorn (because I put a little bit of spray butter and salt) I need to avoid before weighing, unless I want to throw and kick things.
I know exactly what you mean. And not only do I see it on the scale, but after eating lots of sodium, I just FEEL heavier. Not fun. I eat things with sodium in them (obviously) but I never add salt to anything. I always thought my system was sensitive too, but I guess that's just natural. The only good thing about water weight is that as soon as you drink lots of water, you're in the clear again
Ummm..... yummy! SOUP! - yes, loaded with sodium. ~sigh~
Since I don't "cook" & I eat a lot of pre-packaged meals (my fav lunch is Green Giant Healthy Vision frozen veggies with one can of white chunk chicken) ... all good for calories, protein, etc.... but loaded with sodium. Again I say... SIGH!
