I am new to this site and the SB diet. I must tell you I am 24 weeks pregnant and my doctor advised me to start the south beach diet phase 2, cause I was eating too much sugar
I read the book and I understood phase two perfectly. Of course I can't eat anything starchy, cause I am allergic, but I started eating 3 servings of fruit daily. I am doing great, although I get lots of cravings for sugar.
I would like to ask the following:
is it okay to eat fat free greek yogurt with sunflower seeds for breakfast?
can I eat cheese at lunch and at dinner together with my other proteins?
does the fact that I can't eat starch affect the diet negatively ?
my husband is starting from phase1, can he eat dairy?
Yes, you can eat cheese at lunch and at supper. The greek yogurt with sunflower seeds for breakfast is fine. Since you are pregnant, you should not follow the diet exactly or you may lose weight which isn't advised with pregnancy. Talk to your dr and get the specifics. Be anal about it. Ask him/her EXACTLY what a day on the diet for you should look like. Bring a pen and paper and write down what they say.
Actually, these are the ok dairy servings on Phase 1 -
DAIRY
Low-fat (1 percent) or fat-free milk or soy milk
Plain or sugar-free low-fat or fat-free yogurt
Fat-free half & half
, Zenia! And congratulations on your pregnancy. Most of your questions have already been addressed, but let me add that your doctor is correct in advising that you skip the Phase 1 part of this plan and go straight to Phase 2. It's fine to exclude grains, but you must make sure you are getting enough nutrients and vitamins in your diet. Are you able to substitute gluten-free products? There are several good brands available, if you are.
You are allowed 2 cups of dairy a day, and cheese is not included in dairy. It is considered a protein, and may be eaten any time of the day. There is no recommended amount, but you should keep your portions to a reasonable size.
Fruit does trigger cravings for some people, but perhaps you can experiment with your fruit to discover which ones won't bring on the cravings.
Welcome and congrats Zenia! You may also want to play around with what time of day you can eat fruits. Personally I have to eat fruits in the later half of the day, or else I get cravings. Pretty much for me fruit is only desert or as a component of dinner. Just remember that fruit is still sugar - there's a reason we call it nature's candy! Has more nutrients than a Snickers, but still needs to be enjoyed in moderation in my opinion.
2 servings of dairy (no less) are recommended for Phase 1, and cheese is ok too. In terms of you, congrats!!! I would feel free to eat as much whole grain as you wish, even at each meal, but get clear on exactly what that means. I stay away from grains except for quinoa unless I'm on a planned cheat, because they really trigger me, but others will know what is allowed and what is not. As far as fruit goes, my unscientific recommendation is to limit it to 2 servings per day, especially if you find sugar is a trigger. Good luck to you...
I really enjoy this way of eating and I actually don't feel I'm dieting!!! It's just day 4, but I can already see the difference. I don't feel bloated, I am not constipated any more and my skin has become less oily.
I do get some cravings for sugar, but just the thought that I might harm the baby makes them go away. Fruit triggers cravings too, but if I combine it with some cheese or a glass of milk, I am fine.
I am really happy and relieved. The more threads I read, the more excited I get about this way of eating and I am really positive that after having the baby and starting again (from phase one) the pregnancy weight will go away quickly.
This is an exciting way of eating! I love the thought of just knowing what I can and can't eat and not worrying too much about counting calories or reading labels. When introducing some new things (like breads, wraps, pastas, etc.) I research and read a lot, but there are lots of stickies and threads on here where that has already been done. The search option on here is great! I am a bit curious about your starch allergy? Is it a gluten allergy or something else? And like cottage said about your fruits, experiment with different ones to see what might trigger your cravings. I seem to do fine with berries and mangoes, unfortunately I think bananas may be a bit of a trigger so I can only eat them on rare occasions. Journaling your meals is a great way to figure that out so when you do slip up you can go back and figure out what may have caused it.
Again, congratulations! And be sure to stop in here often to post your menus and keep us up to date on how things are coming along!
I hate to think of SB as a "diet" especially when talking about being preggerz! Think about it as a new way of living!
fruit triggers me too, so I will have it on Ph 2 but for dessert or, with a protein (it seems to calm the sugar). Also, be careful of which fruits you are eating: check out the approved foods threads - Phase 1 (will give you the list of good foods to get in plenty of like beans and veggies) and Phase 2
My allergy to starch is actually a weird and rare thing. I am allergic to almost anything containing starch, wheat, potatoes, rice etc. Before finding out, I was always bloated, thought I had IBS, my nails were weak, my hair very fine and I suffered from severe PMS. Of course, getting pregnant was impossible.
Anyway I went to a great doctor who found out by u/s that starch was placed all over my organs, especially my ovaries, uterus and liver. He suggested I should completely avoid starch and sugar. Two months later all the above problems were gone, I got pregnant without any drugs and there is no starch lying on my organs any more. I was always thin, but after eliminating starch I looked both thin and fit, since bloating went away.
When I was 4 months pregnant my husband had an accident and I started eating sugar again, but no starch. I gained more pounds than I should, so my OBgyn suggested me to start SBD phase 2 cause it is very healthy for the baby and it will prevent excessive weight gain.
I only know one person who is also allergic to starch the way I am. It is must be really rare I guess, but I believe that everyone should stay away from refined carbohydrates. They only do harm
Wow, I've never heard of a plain old starch allergy. That's great though that they were able to figure out what it was and recommended that south beach was the way to stay healthy!
