I went there for months. I only averaged about 2-3 pounds loss a month.
As much as I loved it.. It's just not enough for us younger girls.. I feel like it's really good for older ladies, especially if they have any aches and pains..
I'm now at 24hour fitness.. Love it. I actually come home drippin, and theres more options.
My Aunt does Curves, and she likes it and has some success. However she also plays (very intensely, I might add) tennis five times a week and takes her dog on a two mile walk daily.
From other sources I've heard mixed things, some people love it because it is a quick workout (only thirty minutes), and other's didn't feel as though they got a good enough workout out of it. I believe I read somewhere that the average calorie burn for Curves was 180, which is not a lot if that is your only exercise. However I'm not sure what the weights of the people were, so that is sort of superfluous info. Anyway, the one thing that makes me wary of Curves is that they use hydraulic machines, so the amount of effort you put in is the amount you get back. I know that at least I would probably fall victim to getting kind of lazy, and therefore getting less out of the workout as a whole.
Anyway, let us know how you like it! I'd like to hear a 20-something's perspective!
I found it boring and the same thing and not much weight loss. And the bit of weight I did lose I think is more from dropping sodas than the little bit there :/
About 8 years ago, when I was still in high school I did curves. I got into a routine where I would stop there on my way home from school.
I say it depends on how hard you push it during the intervals. I remember there being a bunch of ladies who would gingerly do the cycles and barely break a sweat. Also I found the music annoying.
At the time though, I was very self conscious and going to a gym with mostly old ladies in a private environment was a huge plus.
If done right, it will get your heart rate up, you'll break a sweat and get a workout. Maybe not the best but definately better than nothing.
I actually lost my first 15 lbs by going to Curves with my grandmother and mom. My grandmother enrolled, and then started paying for my mother and I to go as well for a good while. It was fun bonding time, but not really the greatest use of a 30 minute workout. I was a little bored, but this may have just been my 18 year-old prerogative. I find it helps if you have company. Hope you enjoy your free week!
I did Curves until I broke my shoulder and had to stop. You can work as hard as you want to at Curves. The one I went to (and I have gone to others , as well) was not limited to old ladies, it was a mixed crowd.
There is a pretty mixed crowd so far here at our curves! I absolutely love it so far!!!! I don't know how long it would work for me but I get a great discount through my job So I'm thinking I may try it out for awhile!
It's definately not all I'm doing!
I'm going to zumba 2 days a week as well and going walking/running at least every other day!
the thing about Curves is it is only 30 mins, the machines were designed for a woman's body, and if the club has Curves Smart...omg...the work out can be as tough as you can handle! For fun I asked them to let me try the Endurance workout, and I could NOT even do the first machine! So it is not a whimpy workout AT ALL. And, I did not have to walk around to figure out which machines I needed and why?? they told me how each of the machines in a full line Curves, works a different Muscle Group, so you get a full body workout. So My vote is, Wow...how cool. I saw women of all ages, but yes, an older woman can work as easy as she wants to, but how cool...at least she is trying to do something! Love it..
my mom and my aunt (both in their 60s) went to curves for 6 months and both lost about 20 lbs. my cousin (18) went for a month, stopping her other workouts and said it was horribly boring. she said it wasn't enough of a challenge for her and actually gained weight (but her percent body fat went up). probably cuz she was workingout pretty intensely and stopped thinking curves would help. i think it's a great workout IF you add other workouts to it as well, OR if you're just beginning. i can promise you this, it's not as intense as the 30 shred you're doing. go jillian
Curves has one of those workouts that you only get out of it what you put in it. I have an aunt and grandmother who tried it out and said, "It didn't feel hard at all." But I went with my Mom and was trying to show off my skills. (This was two years ago.) I pushed myself so hard that I collapsed in the bathroom after our circuit. Lol! Talk about embarrassing! Point is... If you work the machines hard, you'll see results. My mom did their diet and the circuit 5 days a week, and she got down to a loose size 6 (150 pounds) in 5-6 weeks. She lost 24 inches and 17 pounds in less than 6 weeks! So it does work for those who put in the effort, in my opinion.
I just joined, and I have done it in the past until I had an injury. I have a low level of fitness right now because of some health issues, but I broke a sweat for sure this week, and there was a mixed crowd....20s to 70s. I like that I can do it on the way home from work for 30 minutes and still get home at a decent hour. I also like not trying to figure out "what to do next" as I have done at other gyms. I like not working out with teenaged boys and college kids since I am an overweight middle aged woman. I know it works....I have friends who have done well on it. I also do water aerobics a couple times a week. This all just started, so I can't report how well it works as far as weight loss and inches lost, but I am hopeful.
I don't know much about it myself, but I follow the Youtube account of divaslimsdown, and she's lost almost 200 lbs with Curves. She does other things as well now that she's used to exercising and down so much weight, but she is a big supporter of Curves.
