Default Insulin Resistant and PCOS

Hello all!!

I have been searching for any kind of help to battle Insulin Resistant and PCOS. I have been struggling with my weight for so long, I am just so unhappy. I think the worst part is when the doctors tell you that they aren't really sure how to help ...

SO, for any of your Insulin Resistant and PCOS women ... could you please help me figure out what I need to eat and do in order to lose this weight once and for all!!!

I would really appreciate it!! Thank you!!

Hi!!!

A low-carb diet will definitely help, also are you taking metfromin? this helps to regulate your glucose leves which comes hand in hand with insulin resistance. Not sure what kind of doctor you are seeing that doesnt know how to help since PCOS is pretty well known. Maybe try an endocronologist they can check your hormones sometimes even an obgyn can do that.

Are you tracking calories somehow? I use FitdayPC.

And whatever approach you take to lower the overall carbs -- zone, low gi, south beach, whatever... they are going to have to lower some. Do you know what you normally have? I'd start there. Make NO changes for a week to get a sense of your baseline, and then start taking it in steps.

I second what both the ladies above said. A balanced diet of carbs, proteins and fats is neccesary keep carbs at about 40-45% of daily calories. I definitely recommend picking up the books the pcos protection plan and the dieticians guide to pcos and checking them out SO HELPFUL! Also, be sure to keep your calories a bit lower than what metaolic calculators say you need to lose weight. God numbers for people with pcos seem to be in the 1200-1800 range (on average from what ive seen). Al metabolic calcs say I need to eat 2200 cals to lose but because of my insulin resistance if I eat that much consistantly I pack on the lbs MAJORLY i typically personally have anywhere from 1200-1500 cals a day with anywhere from 100-150 carbs (just depending on how that day ended). Hello all!!

@dys24 - Yes, I am taking Metformin. I have been on it for about 5+ years ... I am on the 500 mg ER, supposed to take 4 pills a day. However, over this past year, I have had really bad reactions to 4 pills. Never before did I have any problems. So, now I am on 1/day.
Low Carb has always been good for me, I just hate that I CRAVE carbs. I mean, I did Atkins there and lost about 20 lbs, but I started to introduce carbs again and just gained the weight back.

@astrophe - Thank you for your suggestions on the books. I am a carb lover! So, I obviously have WAY too many!! Thank you for your advice.

@SMSDREAMER2007 - Thank you for your advice as well, I really appreciate it. I know that I need to be around about the same 1200-1500 calories.

Also, I meant to say that I am seeing an Endocronologist and he finally got my thyroid in order. But, he has been checking my hormones and they are all perfect!! So, now it is getting the weight under control ...
When I said he doesn't know what to do -- he basically said that he doesn't have a magic pill, but no advice was given either!!

You should explore the idea of taking cinnamon or chromium supplements. I started them and cravings for carbs and sugar literally stopped. There are a few threads in this forum with people's experience on them. Seems to be almost unanimous that they help with the cravings. I take them both, so I'm not sure which one helps with the cravings...

Hi Allie!

I think the real starting place is to start keeping track of what you're eating. Write it down. And if you're getting cravings and stuff like that..... well, write it down too and figure out what caused it.

Slowly you'll work out a plan that works for you and your body.... and because we're all different, we can only give you suggestions....

I think the hardest part is coming to terms that losing weight and changing your habits is going to be WORK......... that gets easier once you get used to it.

Consistency is key.... keeping track is important.... eating healthy, unprocessed, no refined carbs is probably the way for most PCOS women to go down.
