I'm sure severity of the break and age of the person who broke it dictate how long you should heal with no activity, but I would bet my life that you shouldn't do any impact exercise 6-8 wks at LEAST after the break.
I'm also pretty sure you're smart enough to follow doctor's orders.
That said, there should be plenty of things you can do in the weight room with other body parts, and without any impact on your ankle.
In fact, why don't you make lemonade out of lemons and use this as an opportunity to learn different strengthening exercises out of your comfort zone? You have the perfect excuse! "I broke my ankle, so can you show me how I can exercise without hurting my break?" ask that to ANYone in ANY gym or even outdoors in public, I'm sure you'll get some advice and probably even make a friend.
