Default New and finally ready to do this

Hi Everyone,
I am fat and have been forever. I don't know how much I weigh, but it is something over 400 since that's where the doctor's scale maxed-out. I am sick of the pain in my knees and avoiding mirrors and meeting new people, and walking up (or down) stairs and so many other activities I had given up on. A couple of weeks ago something inside my head changed, and I started eating healthy food, stopped the binging, and started moving my body around a little more. My knees feel better and I'm walking the dog a little farther every night and my pants are a little looser, so I know I'm on the right track. It feels pretty good.

I'd like to talk with people like me who are also on a long road to becoming fit and with people who were morbidly obese and have become and remained fit.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
I look forward to getting to know many of you,
-Snap

dear snap,
wellcome! there are many of us here struggling and trying to do out best from day to day, so you will find plenty of support and understanding. you've come to the right place!
no matter how hard it gets sometimes, always remember that the best part of your life started the day you started eating healthy and it is so much better to work hard to stay on track then to go back to that feeling of fear and guilt when you just let go.
good luck and let us know how you are doing!

Hi Lisa, Hi Quince,

Lisa I added you to my buddy list too, thank you both for the encouragement.

I'm 42 and live in a very small town in Vermont. I had been eating so very much too much and moving as minimally as possible for so long, it is very easy right now to 'do better than that' which is the extent of my goal setting at this point. I'm not sure if getting into the numbers (goal weights, dates, measurements, calories, exercise logs) would be motivating, or the opposite. For me I think it may be better to focus on getting more fit and more healthy and view the weight loss as a byproduct of the process.

If anyone has any suggestions or opinions on that, I'm interested in hearing them. I'm new at all of this and am very open to learning from others.

Thanks again,
-Snap

Hey Snap & Welcome to 3FC

I'm in New England, too.

Setting goals for yourself that are more generally all around health related and less specifically weight related is a great thing, especially if it motivates you.

I would at some point find a place to get an accurate weight number. Even if it's just to start, because once you do begin losing weight it's nice to see that number go down. Not that you have to weigh every week like some people do, but just as a point of reference for the future.

You don't necessarily have to have all that to get healthier, though. In fact, the choices you've made already are excellent. And continuing to do just those things, plus building up as time goes on, is exactly what you need to do in order to be healthier and eventually drop some excess weight.

You might not be sure if keeping logs of things will help, but you'll never know until you try. You don't even have to make it a certain number of calories type of log, but even just keeping track of the different types of food you eat you might see patterns or discover something useful for your plan of action.

One last tip, and probably the most important thing I can say... no matter what happens. Regardless of potential future "bad days" or "bad weeks".. you. can. do. this. Always, always, always get back up and get back to healthier. Healthier doesn't mean constant perfection. It means healthier. It means always doing a little bit more than you used to do. That's it.

It's not always easy, but you can do this.

There are a couple support groups you might be interested in reading. Under Support Groups... 100lb Club, 300+ area, the 40-somethings. Just to start you off.

So glad to have you join up to 3FC =) Post, participate wherever you're comfortable, ask questions. Anything.

Best of wishes, and I hope to see you around often
