I work in television and today I'm shooting a commercial alllll day long. The worst thing about being on set is all of the free food!! I usually eat mindlessly throughout the day because it's there and I'm bored (long days). I'm only a few days into my diet and this is a huge struggle for me today! For breakfast I said no to french toast, hash browns and donuts and i ate a banana and some nuts. It's getting to be closer to lunch and my instinct is to snack. I've been trying to stay away from the craft service table which is filled with candy, chips, cookies, pastries, cheese dip etc!!
I've already eaten 2 mini resees peanut butter cups and a Hershey's kiss. Everytime I eat something I make sure to log it into my food journal so I can have an idea of what each bite actually costs me.
What are some things you do in situations where you're around all the wrong types of food? I used to love this part of my job haha which is why I'm on this diet in the first place!!
All that food is a huge temptation. My only advice is to bring your own healthy snacks with you to the shoots. Snack on your healthier foods and stay as far from the food table as possible.
Good luck that would be a tough one for me too.
arm yourself with sugar free gum! i do that when i have to be around potlucks. i eat my meal, and then chew a really strong piece or two of sugar free gum so i don't end up going back for more. if it's one of those strong minty flavors it would make other food you eat after it taste bad anyway.
That's a tough one. I would have to plan ahead to make that work for me. The easiest plan, of course, would be to bring everything from home and the plan is "eat what I brought." I suspect I would have had to do that when I was first starting this journey to have any chance of success.
Now that I can keep track of exchanges in my head if I have to, I would be able to approach a table of free food at lunch time and say, "Okay, I need one starch, one or two proteins, all the veggies I can find and maybe a fruit if it looks good." Everything else on the table gets labeled in my brain as "not about me."
I've also found it useful at some stages to plan a treat. I have (and enjoy!) the planned treat at the planned time, then I'm able to forget about treat food for the rest of the day. For other things, I do better if I just don't go there. If I'm committed to not eating sweets, for example, then my brain is forced to focus on something else.
I drink loads of water throughout the day. I convince/tell myself that the sugar/fat/salty treats are not meant for me. I would try to find the healthiest treat possible for a snack and pack my own lunch--something I really like and look forward to. Your job sounds like alot of fun! Focus on how much fun you are having and you are actually getting paid to do it!
Who decides what kind of food to bring? Who actually orders and purchases all this junk food? I think I'd be having a little talk with them...lol
Seriously, don't they know that crap is bad for you? Don't they realize that they are going to run out of "beautiful-thin people" for their commercials if they keep fattening them up?
See if there is stuff you can focus on in your down time that's not related to food
^ Yep. You used "eating mindlessly" and "bored" in your post.
Also, you're giving yourself little nibbles of it with chocolate throughout the day. You're stringing yourself along and probably making your blood sugar crazy, making you crave that carb-y stuff more. If you don't want to turn down something yummy, pick one thing and let yourself have a rational portion of it. Just have your portion toward the end of your day so you aren't tempted to graze all day but you still get that yummy snack. The rest of the day, eat well and make sure to get your protein in if you're gonna have that heavy carb stuff as your snack. Instead of brain-work to control your appetite, let your body have a shot at it. Hang in there. It's possible to tell your appetite what to do.
I take the right kind of food with me and remind myself throughtout the day how much better I feel when I eat right and the next morning I don't wake up with guilt.
Thank you all so much for your advice!! It honestly has helped me think about a lot of things and understand how to face the issue.
I am definitely going to start bringing my own snacks and just staying away from the table all together. I never really thought of bringing my own because I just always relied on the fact that there would be food there.
They do have some healthy food mixed in but I'm not really at the point yet where I can avoid the junk food and choose a healthier option. I have a huge sugar addiction and if it's there, I'll grab it.
Lori Bell- On each job there is a different caterer/craft service person. Sometimes there are healthy tables with tons of fruits/veggies/diet options but most of the time it's junk. Most of the crew are men who don't diet and love to grab handfuls of junk throughout the day lol. I totally agree with you, it would be much healthier for everyone throughout the day if they had better choices for us!

Absolutely pat yourself on the back for being able to say ya know what, i'm not at a spot I can avoid the junk beside the fruit so I'll bring my own.
