Default Hi/new to PCOS

I've been on these boards for awhile now mainly in the weight loss section only or general chatter threads. I've struggled with my weight for a long time and can never lose very much weight. Finally some things are starting to click for me in regards to my weight loss journey and other medical issues that I've been dealing with for a long time but never realized it was connected to my having PCOS. I now have a new doctor who is prescribing metformin and who has urged me to be proactive and do my research. She is being pretty supportive compared to my last doctor. My last doctor just told me to take birth control pills and made it seem that PCOS wasn't a big deal. However, my mom died about a year ago from a five year long battle with breast cancer and before she died I promised her I would start taking better care of myself. So long story short here I am.

Welcome Blonde I'm so sorry to hear about your mom I'm glad you are on the road to health and are taking care of yourself It sounds like you have a plan now and having a doctor who will listen to you is key. There are great people here who understand what you are going through. Feel free to just jump on into whatever is being discussed LOL! I may be starting metformin myself. I have to have blood tests in a few months first. Did your doc do blood tests? How do you feel on it ? My BIL just started it a couple of months ago for type-2 diabetes and he has lost 15 pounds. I would love to lose some weight :P

Violet-Thank you for the condolences. It's been a hard year to say the least. At the time of my diagnosis a couple years ago my OB gyn did a blood test and then we also did a glucose fasting test and I had to drink a nasty drink and they took MORE blood hourly. My numbers for the most part came back pretty good but were still not normal and just showed that I do have difficulty processing insulin because I am IR as well. This past month my new doctor and I did a standard physical and my blood work came back almost perfect but still slightly off. So that's why I asked to go on it since I am sick and tired of being tired haha and being this size 18 when I used to be a size 6. As far as how I have felt on the metformin these past 10 days, I have been feeling a little headachey in the afternoons but it's not horrible. Not sure if I need to add a snack with some protein in it to perhaps help with the headache. I've also felt a little stomach discomfort which is common but nothing major. I have noticed I don't seem to crave sugar or sweet things so much anymore already so that's a major plus. I did the first 500mg pill for about 10 days and just added the second pill last night for the first time right before I went to bed so now I am on 1000mg. I have also switched to a low-carb diet this past week and that has been a bit hard. I slipped up a couple of times yesterday just simply because I forgot! It's amazing how much of our meals are centered around potatoes, rice, pasta, etc. Thank you for the lovely welcome! I've just been lurking and reading mostly and just trying to absorb any information I can. I will start jumping in if I have any questions! :-)

You and I are about the same size. I'm about an 18/20. I wanna weigh 130 or 140. We can do this I do low carb/low calorie. I can't be in ketosis now cause I'm on Topamax for migraines. I'm gluten intolerant so I don't eat breads and pasta anyway. yeah, I have a lot going on (LOL) but it all goes hand in hand really. Gluten allergies/ metabolic syndrome/ PCOS/hypothyroidism/arthritis and I'm only 37! I have it all LOL! All in all, I feel pretty great and ready to get this weight off! You really don't have that much to lose when you really look at it. I know that it may look that way to you but you are on the right track now and you can do it. You are already under 200 pounds which is a goal for most people. Just keep going and watch your little cheerleader girl on your weight tracker move on down!

Violet-Actually my ticker is wrong! I keep forgetting to change it. After my mother died I gained all the weight back that I had worked so hard to lose plus 7 pounds more and got up to almost 222 at this past Christmas. I've lost down to 212 since the end of December. For the past 2 months I've been yo-yoing anywhere from 214 to 211 but the scale always seems to settle in at 212. But thanks for the encouragement! :-)

And whew.. you do have some medical issues that you do have to be careful with. I've been thinking about being on Atkins but that carb induction plan is really low and I'm not sure I like the idea of ketosis. It just makes me nervous. Perhaps because I don't fully understand the idea behind it. I also don't want to give up my fruits lol. I am doing low calorie and my calories for the day is just under 1400.
