Default Having trouble eating "real" food... because of too much flavor...

Ok... maybe I'm a weirdo. I love bland foods. I think that saltine crackers have too much flavor. I could live off of plain pasta, white bread, and water... and I probably would be content (pallete-wise that is).

Anyways... I'm trying to eat no processed foods. Which means, no white pastas, no white bread, and more whole grains, real fruits and veggies... etc.

I love canned green beans. Just the right flavor of blandness... with a hint of flavor. Well... I tried fresh snap beans... straight from a farmer's market. I was able to eat a total of 5 over the course of the entire day. The "green" taste of them was just so strong. One of the reasons I don't like fresh brocolli either... too much taste.

I mean... I like the taste... most of the time... but it's usually so overpowering that I have trouble eating much of it. Maybe it's because I've never really eaten some of these things in the past... and that's why...

I dunno... anyone else like me? Or like most people I know who don't like to eat lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, etc because they have no taste? I mean... I would put ranch dressing on lettuce to try and tone down the "green" taste of the lettuce... tomatoes... while I like them... have a taste that is enormously strong... I have a hard time eating them as is... especially grape or cherry tomatoes.


I'm just weird I guess... I made some irish soda bread earlier... with whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose. It's yummy (I put around 2 tbsp of honey and some raisins in... otherwise... just buttermilk, flour, baking soda, and a bit of salt)... but while my little brother thinks it's very bland... I find the flavor to be pretty strong. Wheat just has a very specific taste. Not bad... just... strong.

You could try making your own pasta.

I don't really like the taste of green beans & lettuce. But if you were to season those green beans with some pork fat & onions then that's a different story, but it's also why I'm fat. But as far as lettuce goes I've started eating artisan lettuces and I find I like them more than just regular iceburg, romaine, bibb or regular lettuces and I don't need to use as much salad dressing with it either.

I think I get what you mean. I've developed a very low tolerance for salty food. I also live in a house where I'm the only one who doesn't like spicy food. So, for my family, my cooking and the food I like to eat are bland.

I'm sorry, I wish I knew how to help you, I adore food with flavor so I am really completely the opposite. I don't think you are alone, though - I have known people very sensitive to certain tastes who respond to foods the way you do.

I think it's very interesting the way you talk about the "green" taste of string beans. How were they prepared? I would not eat too many string beans raw - they do have a very strong flavor. I find roasting string beans brings out a wonderful nutty flavor, you might try that.

Actually I am on a complete roasting kick right now - I roast all kinds of vegetables. Just toss them with a little oil (I use about 1 tbsp of oil per pound of vegetables) and roast at a very high temperature, 500 degrees F, for 15 minutes. I toss with salt and pepper after that but you might not want to. Cauliflower has a very mild flavor - maybe you will find that palatable?

Best of luck to you ... I hope you can develop a taste for at least a few healthier foods. Greens are really so good for you. And I love the bulk and volume they add to my meals - honestly I don't know how I would have lost nearly 80 pounds without copious vegetables.

I love vegetables... I really do. But I just find that most raw vegetables have very strong flavors. Not bad.... Just strong. maybe they're just more along the lines of acquired tastes that I'll just get used to.

I think perhaps I've lost the thread of what you were trying to say. If the problem is specifically raw vegetables - you don't have to "get used to" the flavor of raw vegetables if you prefer them cooked, do you?

Raw vegetables do have very strong flavors - that is not a peculiarity of your taste sensitivity, I don't think, it's just a fact. Most vegetables benefit from some kind of preparation.

Speaking just for myself - apart from a few kinds of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, sprouts, and occasionally sweet peppers - all of which I eat on sandwiches - I rarely eat vegetables raw. Green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, sweet peppers, tomatoes, carrots & celery, chinese broccoli and other greens, broccoli rabe, brussels sprouts - all of these feature regularly in my meals but never, ever raw.

I'm ok with most foods, but fruits are typically too strong/sour for me. I wish I could pour sugar on them but that's not an option, lol. My husband laughs at me when oranges and strawberries make me pucker up like a lemon would. My solution is to mix them in with smoothies; adding yogurt and other ingredients sort of blands it up enough for me to ingest them.

I also love "white" foods and miss them terribly. There's really nothing like bland eating, lol.

I've noticed since I have been on my diet that I am more sensitive to spicy foods.

There is a subset of the population called supertasters. Basically I think they have elevated number of taste buds so they can taste bitterness in veg etc that we cannot.

However I don't think you are a supertaster because these people dislike the foods due to bitterness. It sounds like you're just used to blander flavors.

And most people dont like raw green beans! If you like them cookedby all means, have them cooked!
