Last night's episode on Heavy. Thoughts? Opinions?
Well i LOVE Heavy btw and I tuned in last night. I noticed that they were at a different facility. Now I think I like this new place a lot better than the old one. The main reason is because they showed them eating a more realistic amount of food. They ate a 300 cal lunch and they had a chicken breast, some salsa and even a few chips! That made me soooo happy! The other place had them eating (on camera) 5 green beans and a tiny piece of fish. That was discouraging to watch!
I even like the trainers better at this place and they showed a lot more of the health assessment. I also liked the big reveal when they finally made it back home!
The only thing I didnt really like about this facility is the fact that they stayed there in a controled environment the entire 6 months! They should have sent them home so they could see if they learned valuable lessons enough to do it on their own. All in all i really liked this new place and cant wait until next week!
I like it better when they are in that controlled environment for 1 month and then go home. I think it is more realistic and helpful for the rest of us to see how they deal with their workouts and food intake while they still have all of their responsibilities at home to take care of, too.
And holy crap is it possible to lose almost 200 lbs in 6 months? Really? And then run 180 minutes on a treadmill?
I really liked this show because it was different than the other weight loss shows out there. I sort of wrote off the large amounts of weight some of the morbidly obese people have lost because they were so heavy to begin with. But this is like a biggest loser atmosphere/results/reveal and I'm not digging it as much.
I've been meaning to watch this show, but a weight loss show that I really like is "I Used to be Fat" because it's more targeted towards my age group and I find it really motivating. They've shown people who stick to the plan and lose weight no problem, then they have kids that sort of fall off the wagon half through and get back on as well as one kid who started strong and finished weak because he lost the drive to get his goal weight. I do have some issues with the show though, because it shows kids in the mid 200s - mid 300s range losing at least 60 - 90 pounds in 3 months or less. They work out for 4 - 5 hours a day and eat kind of bland small portions.
Is this what I should expect from Heavy? Or do they try to have a more realistic approach where they're not focusing 100% of every day on working out? 'I used to be fat' takes place over the summer so these kids aren't really working or anything and have the time to devote 5 hours a day to fitness, but in the real world for some even an hour or two of working out every day can be hard to squeeze in.
In the earlier episodes they show 2 individuals who have health assessments and then go to a facility for 1 month with no distractions. They eat calorie-controlled portions of food and work out super hard with trainers. After that month they go home where they have a personal trainer for the next 5 months and do it on their own but if they mess up and start to gain weight they bring them back to the facility to get them back on the right path.
This past episode they were at the place for the whole 6 months.
Personally, I'd like to see them focus more on food -- meeting with dietitians, figuring out portion sizes and what to eat. They say that exercise is only 20% of the equation and food is 80% so it seems like instead of focusing on working out hours a day until you puke they'd focus more on nutritional guidelines, how to feed your family, good options when you are pressed for time, etc.
I completely agree. I know that I need to exercise to get the weight off but thats not the most important thing. I need to know what types of foods to eat and which ones to stay away from. Im having a hard time with determining the right amount of calories to consume. If you eat too much u gain, and if you eat too little u gain! Its so confusing. I really wish they would show more of the nutrition aspect.
Last night was interesting. I think I would be able to lose the weight quicker at the facility in NC because I'd be in a controlled environment. I do, however, think I'd be at higher risk for putting the weight back on. I think the other episodes where they go home after a month but are monitored gives a better chance of developing a lifestyle change and fitting the plan into ones real life. That is why some of them stalled, gained, and had initial setbacks but ultimately lost in the sixth month period.
On a side note, it seems weird to me that some of the participants had skin removal not even at halfway through their loss. I always thought you should hit goal before having skin removal...
I loved last night's show. I'm happy for both of them. The man (I think his name was Ronnie?) He was amazing! Cute too!
Man, wasn't he, though? Dude was hot at any weight--but looked hotter once he lost because he looked so much healthier. Loved his relationship with his soon-to-be wife, too--both of them seemed like good people and a great couple. Made me tear up a little at the end.
I did like the previous format of one month in the facility, five months on their own learning how to cope. The weight loss wasn't as dramatic usually (although I think Tom lost about as much as Ronnie), but I felt there was more I could apply in my own life there, that it was a more realistic picture.
I still love the show overall, though. That lunch looked great.
i watched it last night and saw Tom at the end and was like "Holy....." i cant believe it!!! Look at him..he doesnt even look like the same guy.. I couldnt believe it..i was absoloutly shocked out of my tree..wow..I keep thinking to myself..maybe one day that will be me..One quam i have with both Heavy and Biggest loser, is that they dont provide you with the person's height at the start..just the weight..So ..one of the ladies were at my weight by the end of the 6 months but they looked a lot bigger than me..and im thinking...She has got to be a lot shorter than me..cause i dont look like that and i carry my weight on my body the same..so i wish i could see a height too..to see where they started from..
I haven't seen the last episode but I think the problem with a controlled environment is that it's not the real world. You aren't surrounded by health conscious people anymore but people who want to go eat out, who want to bring bagels and donuts to work, etc.
I was a bit discouraged for them when at the end of the show it said they had maintained their weight loss and not lost any more. They both still needed to lose more weight and I wonder if they will manage to continue to or not and if not is it because they were in the controlled environment the whole 6 months and they did not learn the skills needed after the show?
I loved when he did the run, but I was sort of disappointed that the woman just stood there while he ran. I thought she could have walked along side him for all or part of the time.
I love the show, but I really like the other set-up better where they go home for most of the time. Plus I really love that location, it's sooo gorgeous! It was weird, I felt like I was watching a different show.
I think some of them had skin removed for mobility-related reasons. The ones who have had the skin removed had a lot in the front that seemed to be keeping them from moving well. On TBL, I wonder if Arthur wouldn't do better if he had all the skin in the front removed after some more weight loss.
I just watched it! This thread reminded me that I completely forgot about it this week, I haven't missed one yet so I had to get caught up!
I liked the intake process so much more on this episode, I think the doctor in the others is kind of a jerk. I get it - tough love, whatever, still a d*ck.
I enjoyed the trainers just as much as the other shows, and I enjoy the litttttle bit extra they showed about the food. But still, please?! someone work THAT into a show! Part of me feels that the exercising process is so grotesque, (NO ONE looks good workingout till they puke, but I know I'd look esp. gross doing it) that might be part of the draw? IDK, I hate to be that cynical of society....but....
I loved the guy!! and cuuuute the whole time! I SO wish I had that athlete mentality, but working out wise - I'm totally like the chick. I did not like her at all but I think thats because I totally saw my future self in her. I will work my way up to 44 yrs old and 400 lbs too, if I don't put a stop to it and get control of myself now. So I'm glad I watched it!! I love this show, either in this format or the other....but I do prefer to see the home life and challanges at home more.
