Ive watched Biggest loser and ive watched heavy..i thought biggest loser would inspire me..and watching them do challenges and watching them workout so much, did inspire me to want to work out more..like maybe there is something to this working out thing..but on the other hand, it seems like heavy really emphasizes doing it the lifestyle at home..and that makes me think it doesnt require living in a weight loss bubble to have to lose weight. What do you think?
i love them both!! i watch TBL, HEAVY and i also watch I USED TO BE FAT...and i will get inspiration from any source I can!
congrats on losing 10 pounds already! way to go!
I like watching them both but Heavy touches my heart the most. I think it was what actually woke me up this time and got me started again. I can't wait to watch it each week.
"Heavy" is the only weight-loss-themed show I watch regularly, although I have seen clips of "TBL." In fact, I saw a clip of "TBL" in which the trainer planted his foot on the large abdomen of a man who'd worked himself to exhaustion--literally stepping on the guy as casually as you might wipe your feet on a doormat. On "Heavy," I see the trainers reaching out to support or hug the people on that show, offering them a hand up if they need it.
Those two images pretty much sum up my take on both shows. I prefer to watch the show with supportive, caring trainers to the show with trainers who seem to dislike overweight people.
they are both inspiring, but i prefer tbl, there are definite flaws to both shows. but i like them just for the fact i can see someone bigger than me and see them do it, and say why not me!! and that has been the biggest thing i have gained from the shows..why not
I was the Biggest Loser but I can hardly remain interested.....I end up going online, etc....but when I watch Heavy, I connect more with the people. I'm starting to become disgusted with The Biggest Loser. It's so cruel. I have read about how they treat some of the people behind the scenes and that a lot of it is just fake....like one week is sometimes actually 2 weeks, etc. I think it sets up very unrealistic expectations. I still watch TBL, but I'm not sure for how much longer.
Heavy was touching and inspiring - even DH watched it with me! TBL is too manipulative and game show for my tastes.
I also used to watch the show about Brookhaven obesity clinic. That one could be heart-breaking. Very realistic - some folks, even with an inpatient-setting, couldn't stop themselves from calling Chinese food delivery! There was some success but some people didn't get out alive. Hard to watch but the raw truth.
The only thing that's holding me back from totally loving Heavy is that there's no "where are they now" beyond the end of their 6 months.
I gain inspiration from both shows. I don't watch TBL for a realistic look at weight loss. I watch it for entertainment. I do get inspired by the sheer will of some of the contestants to push through anything. But I know it's not realistic and I don't fault the show for that.
All of us (Hubby, Son and I) watch Heavy. Each week I can't keep the tears from rolling. I am rooting for them from my chair, praying they succeed. My heart hurts and I feel their pain. They are very inspiring and I can't wait to see it each week. I do wish they'd show more updates (a more of a look at them now kind of thing) I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's episode. I think I remember them saying it will be the most dramatic reveal yet.
I've watched every show mentioned in this thread, and I love them all.
Honestly, I want to watch a show that has no games, and is realistic to a tee, and shows the entire weight-loss journey.
TBL is too much gameplay, and it's unrealistic for the real world, and we don't really get much of an idea of what they eat or how they exercise.
Heavy only shows part of the weight loss, and it starts out as a controlled environment.
Brookhaven is just the most extreme cases.
I Used To Be Fat is only a summer, and only for kids right before college.
I want to see someone I can seriously relate to. Someone who can't afford a personal trainer. Someone who can't afford strictly healthy foods. Someone who is obese, living in the world, picking up info here and there and doing what she can with it. If I can see a person like that lose all the weight, THAT would be much more motivating, because I can truly and honestly relate.
I haven't seen a whole lot of either show, but I have seen a little of both and I much preferred Heavy. Actually, the biggest loser is probably the only weight loss show I didn't even like at all. Because of the gameplay already cited, and because I couldn't really really get into a show where people were berated for only losing 100 lbs a week or whatever! ;-)

Great post! I'd love to see what you described as well! If I weren't such a shy private person I'd be tempted to video tape my journey. Does anyone here know of anyone who has?
Love watching them both, but i think Heavy is the most like real life. Who can take that much time off for themselves in the real world. I could not afford it, and really we need to learn to do it on our own too after we have some training and help to steer us in the right direction. Do like TBL but the game play ticks me off sometimes, I know it is a game show but it is based on weight loss and peoples lives.
However, they are both reality shows, only from a different point of view.
The one underlying current that I see in all the people involved, is that no one ever challenged them to put out! To take responsibility, to own whatever their problem is, to let it go, forgive and go forward!
I have never watched TBL, but I LOVE "Heavy"....I find I connect with the people more, and every week I renew my commitment to work hard and do well in the upcoming week.
I also really like X-Weighted, but that's on in the day and I often miss it.
