I have been reading all the fantastic results everyone has been getting but apparently this diet is not available in Australia.
Is there a way to substitute the items?
I remember I lost 30 pounds very quickly about 6 years ago using just the EAS shakes. I didn't know anything about this plan. EAS isn't available here either. I only gained the weight back in the last year so I did keep it off.
HA I should really change my sig. I wish I was 177! I'm 191.5 today.
i have found a few protein shakes here that were about $5 each and tasted horrible.
I am wondering how to do this without the products they offer?
Eat the same amount of protein in real food! Seriously, there's nothing magic about a shake. In fact, whey is digested more quickly than the protein in meats and eggs, so it doesn't have the same satiating effect as less processed sources of protein. Shakes are good ways to get protein to your body quickly around intensive weight training, and they are *really* good for supplement manufacturers and sellers, because people pay ridiculous amounts of money per gram of protein. But they aren't magic.
If you really must get your protein in drink form, check out the on-line companies that sell protein to the bodybuilder / powerlifter market. It's the same stuff, just cheaper. Trueprotein.com is one trusted source (no affiliation etc etc), but I don't know if they ship to Australia.
Check out the above links. It will help you to see how Dr Tran designed the diet that Ideal Protein is based on. He explains how to do the diet without the products by using real food and some protein sources.
To find a good protein source look for a health food store that the body builders shop at in your area then, ask someone really knowledgeable in the store about the types of protein. There may be many proteins. You want on that is highly bio available and NOT bulked up with a large volume of fillers or extras. A good quality protein may be expensive.
Our protein is about 98% bio available so we tend to absorb more of the nutrition from the 18-20g per serving of protein we get.
IMHO, the advantage of using packaged protein sources for weight loss is that (if you buy good quality products) you get a food source that is high in protein, has a good assortment of vitamins and minerals, AND is very low in fat/calories/carbs. It is harder to find that combination in whole food sources (e.g. compare fish to an IP shake). So, as Carla pointed out, if you are going to purchase a protein (powder or shake) it needs to be high quality. Many of the "muscle shakes" are very high in carbs and will probably not get you into ketosis, so you will need to find one that will get you the amount of protein you need without having the calories or carbs go too high--a difficult balance. But there are other products that do this. Here is the link to the google database a number of IP'ers have started, which also tabulates for several non-IP brands (click the tabs along the bottom). https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...3c&hl=en#gid=1
Hopefully one of them is carried in Australia (or will ship there reasonably!). And if you do start purchasing some other brand, I urge you to share that information by adding to this chart and/or posting on the Alternative IP sticky, so others can benefit from your success.
Thanks again. I think I may have found something here called Aussie Bodies. The composition is listed below. I'll keep looking though.
I wish we had EAS here as I did really well on that with my own made up diet which seems to be pretty much what the Ideal Protein diet is but I just didn't know it.
I am just so frustrated with regular dieting.
I started back on December 31 with calorie counting and have been perfect staying below 1500 calories and drinking lots of water and exercising an hour a day. I quickly lost 5 pounds of water weight but haven't lost anything in 3 weeks. I'm sitting here at 191.5 from the high weight of 194. So only 2.5 lbs. And haven't lost any inches either. It is very discouraging and frustrating.

NO! Er, no. That won't work. It's got 1/2 as many carbohydrates and sugar, in just one serving, as you'd get on the IP program for a whole day. And the amount of sodium is outrageous.
This is a LOW carb diet with essential amino acids, highly-digestible protein, essential but low fat, and about 800 calories a day. Please read through the alternative stickie, or through the 4 phases of the program to get a grounding.
So if I ate chicken for breakfast like in the protocol on the web page that is the same as have a protein powder serving?
Eating chicken, real protein, isn't at all like being on the program. Real protein is harder to digest and absorb that protein isolate. That doesn't mean that you can't devise your own program. I'm just doing a basic comparison between what you're proposing and IP protocol.

Linden,
What am I missing? Here is what I am doing.
I am assuming the first 2 servings of 30g and 100g are scoops of powder mixed with water. The last is a 30g serving with 250ml of skim milk.
I see the 30g serving as having 113 calories, 27.2 g protein, .1g fat, ,5g carb with some sugar and 180mg of sodium. The highest carb values occur if mixed with milk thus, come from the milk, and we know that wouldn't be permitted on the diet.
That seemed pretty comparable to the IP ready to drink vanilla and the IP cereal. The cereal has 150g sodium. The new packets of several things now list sugars.
I would say this works. It works quite well if she also takes an amino acid supplement.

Where am I going wrong?
Thank you!
That is my understanding of the label too. I was going by the 30g made with water.
Here is the amino acid list this has. I found another one that had less sodium. I will get some tomorrow and get my other items and get started.
My apologies to both of you. I meant to say twice as much carbs, not 1/2. I don't know where my head was. But I thought what you were drink, beledigirl, was the protein with milk. If it's with water, it looks really good -- as Carla so nicely points out.

Thanks Linden! I wasn't sure. I was thinking I may have been reading the label information incorrectly or something. Sometimes, when I rush or am tired, I see things incorrectly.
(As too where your head was, I am guessing enjoying the clouds of Germany trying to recover from the long journey and sick puppy care.
What did you think of the amino information provided in the last post. I can see it is a complete amino array but, I don't know how much of each is in IP products to make a comparison. Did you have any thoughts for Beledigirl on that? I can't contribute.

I counted and saw that all 18 were there. That's 10 more than some/most IP products? I'm pretty much in the dark beyond that. But I was impressed.
