hello all! I'm 29 (30 in 2 months!), married for 4 years to my wonderful husband, Dave. We have 2 dogs. We've been trying to get pregnant ever since we got married and have so far been unsuccessful. I've never really, really tried to lose weight before. I found this website today and thought it might be some good encouragement and hold me accountable. I started taking Metformin about 10 days ago. I had taken it years ago and had really bad side effects, due to my high fat diet at the time. So far I haven't had any side effects, but I have done a major overhaul of my diet. I'm doing my best to keep track of my calories, lower fat, cut out all fast food and most sweets. So instead of trying fertility drugs again (that didn't work!) I've decided that losing weight is my best bet, plus I'll be healthier overall. Right now I'm considered pre-diabetic (by 1 pt) but I'm deathly worried about developing type 2 diabetes later in life. So basically with 30 staring me down, I figured now is the time

I just posted a reply in the other thread, but I'll say welcome again here! We're in such a similar place - my blood sugar keeps testing fine, but there's Type II diabetes in my family and I'm terrified of it! There's also a lot of heart disease - my father, his father, and his father all had heart attacks in their 40s and 50s, and my father's was the only one that wasn't fatal (though it did result in a quintuple bypass). Bottom line, we have LOTS of reasons to work hard and stay motivated to lose weight and get healthier, and hopefully with that success we'll see some progress with the baby making as well. I know we can do it!

Edited to say:

I don't know if this appeals to you at all, but I saw a thread on here last night that I found SO encouraging. Let's see if I can post a link... ok, I don't have enough posts yet, and so can't post a link. But go to the Calorie Counters forum (a subforum in the Diet Central section), and look for the thread titled "Calorie Counters Before & After Pics". I was so inspired that I took "before" photos last night (in a bathing suit no less - completely horrific!!!!!), and I.can't.wait. to be able to take better and better ones as I progress!

Thanks chickadee! I'll have to check it out. I already have some before photos, in a swimming suit as well. I just got back from a vacation in Mexico 2 weeks ago so lots of photos

I have heart disease that runs in my family, breast cancer as well so the way I see it, I'm going to have a rough time later, no need to add to it with being overweight.

But I feel really, really motivated and this is the first time I've ever felt like this, especially for 2 weeks in a row without giving up LOL

Good luck to us all!

Default Hey from another Cheesehead

I've got heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol running in my family. When I was at 225, my doctor tried me on four blood pressure meds and I had complications on all of them, so we settled for a dieuretic, but I think it's time to stop that as well because I get light headed when I stand up sometimes. At 225 lbs, I was in the pre-diabetic range. Now at 147, I recently ordered myself a glucose monitor as some health sites recommend to check my blood sugar and I'm STILL at the tippy top of the normal range, which is really disappointing, as I've cut all sugars and starches from my diet except for two pieces of fruit a day.
I'm wondering if other Wisconsin people think it's harder to lose weight in Wisconsin than in some other parts of the country. I mean, we've literally got cheese on the brain here.
