The answer for me is whatever you're most likely to stick with. If there's a gym right near your house that's quick and easy to go to, that might be the answer. If the gym is a 30 minute drive, I'd guess that's less likely to keep you going as you start out. Whatever will get you up and moving regularly is the best place to start IMO. You can always change things up and do different things later.
I do both, gym more often during the winter and outside more often during the summer. But find what works for you. Whatever you can stick to. A lot of people here like workout DVDs, but they just aren't for me. I've always been a gym girl, but know people who despise the gym and only exercise outdoors. And so on... to each their own!
I'm a very location orientated person. I have to go to the library/Starbucks to study and the gym to work out. I don't do well with staying home and doing exercise DVDs, although when it gets warmer I love being outside to exercise.
I also love the gym. I feel it keeps me more accountable. I know with running outside or doing videos at home, I'd end up putting it off until later in the day and then not working out at all. With the gym, I have a "get there early and get it done" mindset. By going to the gym, I also can't use the "it's too cold" or "it's raining too hard" excuses.

i agree. i hate hate workout dvd's, and whenever i go to the gym seeing everyone else working out kinda motivates me to keep going whenever im tired. yet when its nice outside i really love running outdoors.
I hate the gym and I always did workout videos. I lost 20 pounds on workout video's but there was so much more motivation for me to get fit back home.. My friend workouts out (she's one of the hard core ones, not a girl that will go to the gym and chit chat with you) she needed a gym buddy so I gave in...and decided to go to the gym with her. Starting tomorrow of course. So what ever floats your boat do it. Somethings will work for you, if they don't for someone else and vise versa.
I like the gym so I can attend their classes. Taking bootcamp or cardio classes help me be accountable and makes it fun. I run outside when Im too lazy to drive to the gym for their treadmill. The gym classes were a key to most of my success

Ooooh, good description. This is so me. Even when I exercise outside, I don't do it in my neighborhood, I go to a park.

That's really interesting.....I'm the exact opposite! I'm a total home body and would rather do things in and around my home than venture out.
Both will work, but the most important thing is finding something you'll keep doing. I personally tried to go to the gym every day, and I eventually just gave up. I'm really forgetful, so every time I went I would forget my iPod, my towel, my water bottle, or even my socks. I was in ballet from age 4 to 18, so I love doing danc-y workout videos... it doesn't feel like a chore to me and I actually enjoy it. Just find what works for you!
I love being at the gym. I have access to a lot of equipment that I wouldn't have otherwise. Right now I want to work on everything, but later on I will be able to decide if I need to spend more time on a specific area. The gym has the machines that target those areas.
I run outside and do weights in my house during the spring/summer/fall and I go to the gym and do the elliptical or treadmill and use their weight machines and do abs at home during the winter. I prefer running outside because I can run more mileage and for longer times when I am outside going down a path by the river than I can on a machine staring at a wall. lol
