Default Filling foods?

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing recently that I'm often hungry on my diet (slimming world) and that the free foods often don't fill me up. Like I feel like I've eaten a lot of watery foods, but nothing that satisfies my appetite.

I know fatty foods can make you feel full , but since that's what I'm trying to avoid, I was wondering what I should go for instead. High fibre foods, high protein foods, just as much fruit and veg as I can???

I think the wintery weather is causing me problems, I wasn't hungry like this in the warm weather. I feel like I should be wrapping up warm and eating hearty meals!

I'm looking for some inspiration after eating way over what I should have last week, and not getting it back under control this week either. I went to Boots and weighed myself earlier to prepare for class tonight, and it looks like I've got a 3lb gain over the fortnight.

You don't say whether you are on red (meaty) or green (pasta, rice and spuds). I am assuming you are on red? On the green you can have a little meat/fish as a healthy option and then fill up on things like pasta, rice and spuds. If you feel you need to be full maybe go for more carbs? Or maybe add some more veg - say in a soup. If it is no or low sin you could dip in whenever you feel hungry.

I am on green all the time and rarely feel hungry (I am a BIG eater). I have loads of veggie curries made with spuds - homemade and loads of rice and pasta. You can add these to salads to bulk it up. I try to avoid too much bread as I know you have to count it as a healthy B. I have an occasional home made sandwich as I hate the mayo drenched shop ones.

If you are on the Red diet and prefer to eat meat then I cannot really advise as I am veggie and to be honest I cannot imagine being full, on however much meat you eat, but I know some people from my club who have done really well and were hopeless at the green one.

Do you attend a class? It might be worth taking note of who has lost the most for least effort. What do they follow? Have they any tips?

That's why I enjoy our class. We all give feedback on our week. I haven;t come across a "greenie" that is hungry - usually they are amazed at what they can eat. A number of reds have complained of being hungry.

Give it a whirl!

Don't know if this will help or not. But I am always a sandwich person at lunchtime. But since I started putting some effort back into losing weight, I have been having a salad with that sandwich and I find that fills me up for the afternoon.

Beyond that I've been making sure I have something to eat every 3 hours, that being the longest gap between eating. Think it is making a difference, although it is still hard....................

Is porridge for breakfast an option? I eat it now - it took a while to get used to it - and I feel warm and full for hours after.

I just make sure it is porridge oats not Ready Brek and I don't add sugar, although I allow myself some reduced sugar marmalade!

Best of all it only takes a minute or so in the microwave. Stef

I buy the oatso simple porridge which is a bit lazy really but weighed out into individual portions it gives me less to think about and I know I am not having too much. I love the golden syrup flavour and all the others too come to mention it!! Keeps the old hunger pangs at bay!!

Yes! That Oatso in golden syrup is lovely. I haven't had it for a while though.

I do have the Original ready break (I mean original flavour, not an antique one). I don't have it often as I am usually in a rush in the morning but sometimes when nothing else takes my fancy, I have it for dinner!

Am an old fashioned weetabix girl myself.

What about the old favourites of rice cakes, ryvita or some of the new varietys around, the snack a jacks are quite good, I like the caramel and the cheese ones, have a packet of salt and vinegar ones to try tonight

Brought some caramel flavoured popcorn cakes to try as well as they are low cals and no fat.

In the co-op they have small bags of dried fruit, prunes, apricots, banana and pineapple, all with no added sugar. Haven't tried them all yet, the prune and apricot ones are delicious and lowfat. Not so sure about the dried banana, but won't knock it until I have tried it.

Water is a great filler upper, although a bit mundane after a while.

Have heard of people who when they feel hungry go and concentrate on something else for 20 minutes or so and if they are still hungry after that, then they consider having something to eat

Another woman who ran a slimming club I used to go to, reccommended laying the snacks you were going to eat, of an evening on small plates along the worktop in the kitchen. One plate with a slice of bread, one with a sliced banana, one with a few raisins, etc. And then set a time for eating each plateful, and not eating it before that time. She always found that after the first couple of plates she couldn't be bothered going back for the rest. But then this amazing woman also threw out the milk that was left in the cereal bowl as soon as she had eaten the last piece of cereal.

Just a few ideas

Default UPDATE

The salt and vinegar snack a jacks are now offically my favourites, have demolished a packet in the last few minutes.

They come in at 123 cals and 2.4g of fat (0.4g of saturated fat) for a 30g back. And they are delicious, dangerously moreish though

I'm not a veggie but I now have mostly green days which is a swap round from when I first started. Three or four days a week I eat chicken or Tuna and count it as a healthy option. I eat a lot of jacket potatoes and my saviours are Mueller lite yoghurts and very low fat cottage cheese. I am never hungry and seem to eat a lot but it is the craving for sweet things that really gets to me sometimes.
