Default Anorexic !

Ok - here's the deal - I have lost 91 lbs in less than 8 months. To be a healthy and NORMAL weight for my height (5ft 7) I need to lose another 54 lbs. I am going to have Christmas with my brother and his family. He was talking about the food for christmas day and telling me about the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon he would make for breakfast (yum) He said he would cook it with butter, and I said no butter for me. He then said i needed to be really careful because he thought I had the potential to become Anorexic !!!!!!! He is not the first to say I;m getting too thin, or I need to stop losing. This is soo negative, when there is clearly so much still to go. I appreciate that it's hard for people who have laways known you fat and that they have a hard time coming to terms with the new you. I'd just like them to all understand that this time I want to see it to the end. I have lost over 100lbs twice before, and regained it because people's comments made me complacent. I know I shouldn't listen, but it infuriates me!!
Rant for the day over xx

I would just respond with "Thank you for your concern but I'm not anorexic just because I'd prefer to not eat butter with my eggs."

I NEVER cook my eggs with butter- I always use olive oil or water- and I'm definitely NOT anorexic.

You could also say something like "thank you for your concern, my doctor is monitoring my health." then change the subject. or repeat as necessary.

I would say something like "Well, if I ever get to the point where I am below a normal BMI, I will let you know. Thanks for your concern."

I wonder if, since this is your boyfriend and not some not-very-close-person in your life, you might want to tell him how those comments make you feel. People throw out that term, anorexic, without really realizing how significant it is.

What beerab said! And honestly, people don't really realize what 100 pounds looks like, or even fifty. He is probably imagining you much skinnier than you'll likely be (at a healthy, normal weight) because the numbers sound so impossibly big. I would just ignore him and continue on your merry way

When I started out I made the mistake of telling my mom I'd like to lose 100 pounds. I won't make that mistake again! People really don't have a concept of what 100 pounds looks like.

Also, as we lose our faces may look gaunt for a while even well before we reach our goals. If people don't look past the face, they may think "anorexic". Sad really.

I think it's very strange how often these comments come up. I personally find them very insensitive and offensive since anorexia is a real and devastating illness.

I've had someone say that to me(!), as well as "don't lose too much weight!" a little mind boggling considering my size. who knows what goes on in people's heads. I wouldn't take it too much to heart.

PS major congrats on losing the 91! maybe your bro just doesn't know what to make of it.

Why did I read boyfriend! Oops! Must be losing my mind a little.

In that case, I agree with what others have said!

I would thank him for his concern.. or just kind of let it slide like water off a ducks back.

I get the feeling that he may not even realize what anorexic is, and is just concerned for your health.

When I was in therapy as a teenager I learned a phrase that has proven to be invaluable in my life: "Thank you for your opinion, I'll take that into consideration." Said politely it is a very effective way of letting someone know you've heard them and that the subject is now closed.

Thanks everyone!
Gale02 - I love that phrase and I will remember to use it !!
It wasn't the eggs though that were the problem, I'm sound enough to refuse to eat them
It's the perception that once we get past what people perceive us to be they have eally hard time adjusting, even (and maybe especially) family.
I will not be derailed from this - I will do it, but was just annoyed at the recent comments which have been coming thick and fast !
