I Often Wonder....If I Ate Like Those Who Had WLS..Would I still Loose the Same?
I have friends who have had the bariatric weight loss surgery. Now they are like so awesome thin. But watching what they could eat the first few months good grief ANYONE would have lost the same amount.
SO if I ate like that wouldn't I loose just the same without the surgery?
I had weight loss surgery about 10 years or so ago and it was horrible. Yes, I lost weight and got down to 118 pounds in less than a year, but I was very sick eating so few calories. I could barely hold anything down. And you know what? I still gained all the weight back after 4 years, because i didnt learn to eat different, was just forced to not be able to eat. But, the stomach does eventually stretch. And, my stomach is permanently messed up. I had my stomach stapled and the ring they put at the stomach opening was absorbed into the lining and caused a blockage. I had to have surgery to remove it and I almost died!
Anyway, yay, you could lose lots of weight eating 200 calories a day, that's the calories they told me to eat, and lose weight getting sick and throwing up half the stuff you eat and have your hair start falling out and get anemic and feel tired and horrible. But, I wouldn't recommend it.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound so rude in my post. I just had a horrible experience with it and it's so dangerous. And, it's not a permanent solution like most think, you can and most do, gain the weight back. And, eating so few calories really, truly messes your body up. I was so weak and sick. If you ate like that, you'd feel horrid...it's not sustainable.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience KatMarie- my friend's mom died from the surgery also- not right away- but after 3 years she had complications and then her intestines collapsed (if I understood my friend correctly). They tried surgery to correct it but it didn't work and she died. I'm glad you made it!
It was hard to do the WLS diet having HAD WLS. I don't think it would be sustainable to do without the the surgery. Also, you wouldn't have the exact same results because you don't have the malabsorption (though the band doesn't have that, either). There are chemical changes that the bypass causes in your body as well.
And yes, people can eat through the surgery, but used correctly the surgery can be a lifesaver.
Kat,
My aunt at 53 had the surgery 4 years ago and DIED of toxication!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO trust me I'm not offended I was glad to read your posts. I just wonder about the eating bit etc......it's crazy wonder how these people do it...
I have seen a few people just eat through surgery.
Most currently a friend of mine here at my office. She had the LapBand. I watched her drink her meals for two weeks before surgery and then for the first two weeks afterwards eat only soft non dairy things. Sure she lost a bunch of weight in that month, but after her "restrictions" came off, she was right back to eating exactly WHAT she was eating before, just smaller portions. There have been more times than I can even count, she has come in to work after overeating the night before and feels like crap.
I think that if you can work through the issues that cause you to overeat, than it could be a good thing, but if you don't address them before hand, you are going to be worse off.
This girl at my office managed to change my mind completely about WLS of any kind. It is not a "magic" bullet.
I don't give much creedance to the lap band. My other aunt had that and honestly two years and almost zero weight loss. But the Bariatric one is much more invasive and I was wondering how those people could possibly eat so very very little.....and still survive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And why not just do that without the surgery and loose the same amount
HOW can you put the weight back on when they actually remove part of your stomach with that surgery?

This is the second time I've heard this same story from a patient. I work with a man who went through the same thing and we almost lost him. And he's gained all the weight back.
The band is much easier to "eat through" because there is no malabsorption and you don't have the changes in tolerances to things. So you don't get dumping syndrome (not that all bypass patients get that, but many do) or the like. So you could theoretically get the band and still have milkshakes galore and see no difference.
Everyone seems to have a horror story about WLS, but I think that eating through the surgery and having terrible complications is the exception rather than the rule. I know quite a few people who have had gastric bypass (myself included) who do well and do not have problems afterward. I don't know anyone who has eaten through the surgery. I'm still early out (7 months), but I have made huge changes in my lifestyle and I certainly didn't go through the **** of surgery to go back to eating the way I used to.
I have considered the bypass many times. I don't have insurance so I guess it's totally out of the question now anyway. Yes I've heard of the dumping syndrome LOL and the people i know did indeed have it but its a small price to loose 100lbs in less than a year when you have struggled your WHOLE life with it ya know?
My skin is a little loose in the belly area, but that is it. I had pretty terrible stretch marks there, though, so I think no matter how I lost it or how slow, it would have been a nightmare in the stomach area. Really, though, my doctor has said my skin is doing really well overall. I won't need plastic surgery, I don't think.
I bet I would...One of my fears of even loosing weight through diet is my skin....After four C-sections needless to say YEP total JELLO effect is there ERRRGGGG
Well, if I was worried about looking perfect, I guess I would need plastic surgery. But they can't get rid of a whole stomach of stretch marks and scars (c-section and surgery) so it's not like I'm going to be in a bikini again even if I did get it. My husband doesn't care, I don't care, I don't wear cropped shirts and the rest of me looks great. I was most worried about having boobs that looked like tennis balls in tube socks and that is not a worry anymore. I mean, they're not great, but they're no worse than they were at my highest weight.
