Unhappy mouth ulcers/ canker sores

I've been dieting pretty heavy for almost a month. Eating about 1200-1500 calories a day. And for almost a month, I've had a series of mouth ulcers! They are killing me and making it hard to eat much. It's like my body is rejecting the good food.. lol!

I thought it might be what I was eating, but I really haven't been eating very much acidic or citrusy foods, so I'm confused. Any advice?

I don't know what causes this (although you can read through these potential causes here:http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/can...SECTION=causes), but I recently heard that rubbing some milk of magnesia helps a lot (with a q-tip). I hope you figure it out.

This exact thing happened to me when I was sick and couldn't eat much. I get cankers occasionally but this time it was REALLY awful, I had ones on my gums almost the size of dimes. I went to the dentist and he said it might be a vitamin B deficiency and gave me an oral rinse to help healing the sores (I can't remember what it was called, if I remember I'll edit.) Things like potatoes, tuna, oatmeal, and turkey have decent amounts of vitamin B, and the rinse really helped a lot. So, I'd actually recommend going to the dentist. In the meantime, I used Zilactin (which is this gel that dries into a sort of oral bandaid, it stings but the topical anesthetic kicks in pretty quickly) to help with the pain. Hope you feel better!

I've always been prone to getting canker sores. I've never been able to decipher a trigger that causes them but boy do they hurt like the devil when they show up!

Probably a vitamin deficiency, try a multivitamin daily and make sure your diet has a lot of variety of fruits and veggies. If that doesn't help see a doctor for sure!

vitamins are a good idea that I hadn't really thought of. Thanks guys! We'll see if that works.
I was actually at the dentist last week and he gave me some samples of some stuff to put on it, but not the Vitamin B rinse.
My dad swears that lysine, which I guess is a vitamin or supplement works too, although I haven't noticed a huge difference.

I had canker sores for years. L-Lysine does REALLY work for me but you have to take a lot of it once the canker starts. When I feel one coming on I take at least 2000 mg. twice a day. The 500 mg. tablets are a little hard to swallow and the 1000 mg. tabs are impossible so I get capsules. I get the capsules at Whole Foods. The tablets you can get at any grocery or drug store. Lysine is an amino acid that your body makes. I think the mouth ulcers are believed to be caused by a virus. Whenever I bite my cheek or something (I grind my teeth at night) I used to get them. Now I know to take extra Lysine. Just recently I was adding a lot of lemon juice to the water I drink (heard you burn more calories) and noticed I was needing the Lysine more. I've stopped the lemon juice and stopped needing the lysine so much. I have mentioned it to all my doctors and they are fine with it. My endrocrinologist has me taking lots of supplements and totally approves but you might want to check with your doc. It works quickly especially if you nip it in the bud. On a daily basis I take 500-1000 mg. if I think of it and feel like swallowing more supplements after taking all the ones my doc. has me on. Hope it works for you.

My doctor reccomends CamphoPhenique. Over the counter , I find it always works.

Me again. If I had some bad ones (I never let it get to that point now) I would take 5000 mg. right away and then every day till it's gone which shouldn't be more than a few days and I see significant improvement sooner. Seems to help heal quicker. The over the counter gels and liquids do have an anesthtic and form a little shield for temporary relief. This is just what I have found works for me.

I probably wasn't taking enough of the lysine. I will see if I can get some capsules because you're right, THEY ARE SOOOO HARD TO SWALLOW! lol

I get these a lot, one time I had as many as ten of them and had a fever from it. The pain was excrutiating, and some foods make it worse. Drinking milk sometimes helps sooth them, but it's temporary. One thing I always keep in my purse is Kanka Soft Brush Gel. It doesn't get rid of them, but numbs them so it's a little more bearable. It's about $5 for a tube, it's near the Orajel, and it brushes on and really helps.

Hope you feel better. I SO know your pain!

Default chlorhexidine gluconate

Hi again iluvbee,
I found one of the bottles of that oral rinse the dentist prescribed (sorry to be unclear, it's some kind of antiseptic, not a vitamin rinse). It's called chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse, 0.12% manufactured by HiTech Pharmacal. The description said it's normally prescribed for gingivitis, which I didn't have, so this must be an off-label use. I remember it tasting funny but it can't hurt to try if it's not too expensive. You do need a prescription though, it doesn't look like there's anything similar available over-the-counter.
