how low do you go?

  • Hi guys, new here.

I've been posting over in chicks in control for a few days and it almost seems like these sub forums are their own little groups!

I'm a little torn between where I should post under (as a recovering EDNOS), but I'm handling my current weight loss goals through calorie counting, so I may be trolling your topics for a while looking for tips.

I do have a question though. I've been using mydailyplate (so freaking helpful) and when I plug all my information in, and I give it my weight loss goals, it informs me that my caloric intake for the day to reach my goals (which I don't see as that unreasonable) would be too low and therefore unhealthy and I should contact a nutritionist for better information or what ever and blah blah blah.

Does anyone here stick to 1000 calorie or less diet days? Or is that stupid and unhealthy?

Oh and if anyone likes to tlak on AIM or YAHOO i am myteaisgreenish I always love talking to new people!
  • hello TeaGreen,
I also spend a lot of time on Jillian Micheal's website and she will state that the fewest calories you should take in in 1 day is 1200. It might seem like a lot to you but it'll keep your metabolism strong.
    best of luck!
    Aubrey
  • Definitely never go under 1200- remember that not getting enough nutrition ALSO inhibits weight loss because your body needs certain nutrients to process so you can lose weight. Specially if you exercise, your body will definitely need those nutrients.
  • The fewest calories a female should consume, even with the intentions of weight loss, is 1200. I know that you're looking at this number and going "wow, that seems like a lot." but, when you consider how many nutrients your body NEEDS to work properly its really not that much.

If you need some help getting your calories up, or have any concerns, feel free to PM me.
  • Previously when I lost 105 pounds, I stuck to 1200 until my exercise routine caused me to need more calories. There were some days I was under and some that I was slightly over 1200 but I always stuck to that goal. When I increased to 1500 calories a day I was paranoid the first few days thinking that I would gain weight. But, because of my exercise (jogging 3 miles/day and lifting weights), it wasn't a problem and I actually felt better because my body needed those extra calories. I am back here again because I gained all my weight back (plus some) after I had a miscarriage and then a special needs baby (who is 5 now, is still special needs and is God's greatest gift to me).
  • First of all, I am not a doctor or nutritionist, but am just sharing what I know

I've heard of very low calorie diets (i.e., under 1000 cal), but have read that these types of diets are ONLY to be done under the supervision of a Dr. so your nutritinal intake and health can be monitored by a professional, as it can be dangerous or even deadly if done improperly. Usually a diet that extreme will only be advised for people who must lose a lot of weight very quickly in order to have a life saving surgery or something like that. So practically speaking, no, you shouldn't go under 1200 calories. (of course one day here or there isn't the end of the world...but women should have at least 1200 on average.)

Another thing to remember is setting reasonable goals. It's not unreasonable for someone 100 lbs heavier than you to want to lose 3 lbs a week, since a 257 lb person needs many more calories to "survive" than you do. 1500 cals for them might enable them to lose 3 lbs a week, but maybe only 1.5 lbs a week for you since your body is lighter and needs fewer calories to "survive."

Hopefully that kind of makes sense?
  • Hi Tea,

I see you are 4'11". Are you a teenager? If so, your caloric needs are probably different (and higher) than women who are done growing. Restricting your calories too much while you are growing is probably dangerous.(If you are full-grown and simply petite, I apologize and I did not mean any offense... just something that occurred to me.)

Do you have a doctor or nutritionist you could consult?

For the record, I vote against 1000 cals, especially if you are still growing.
