I have been waiting until 8 pm to go out, but the temp doesn't drop much, although it's in the low 90s, so it could be worse.
Man, I just have ZERO endurance. I can barely run a mile without walking. Two run two miles I have to take several walk breaks. Then, afterwards I feel like I'm going to puke and as though I've run ten miles.
Should I just keep pushing myself to do what I can figuring if I'm that tired it must be a good enough workout? I feel like I'm wimping out.
I'm away from home and my gym right now, so running inside isn't an option. I don't want to skip my workouts, but I'm sure not enjoying this.
Is there any way you could go in the AM, or after 9PM when it's dark? That makes a big difference for me. I also drink a full glass of water before running in the heat. Also if you run in the dark, you can feel comfortable running in less clothes since people can't see you anyway!
I think there is definitely endurance but endurance can also be built up in the heat. I'd say keep well hydrated, wear cool clothes, etc and do the best you can.
You actually get used to the heat. I worked out at a gym that was air conditioned, now my new gym has a performance side with no a/c in it except for a large fan. It was really uncomfortable at first, but you do get used to it. I would say continue what you are doing and just build up your endurance to the run (and the heat).
I honestly don't drink a ton of water before my run because I always feel like it's sloshing around as I run. It's not a bad idea to try and take a bottle with you in case you need it.
If you can't take the heat, perhaps get up early and go for a run before you start your day?
Well, a year ago I was kinda fit. And the heat does get to me a lot. You're just not going to come close to the endurance or speed. If there is a location with a breeze, or that is at least shaded and off macadam, that should help also.
What about running stairs inside a cool, air-conditioned building? (I've overdone it in the past and hurt my knee, so be careful - especially going down.)
You could also focus on some indoor exercises that don't require a gym. Yoga/pilates. Weight exercises that use your own body weight (i.e., push ups). Squats. Lunges. Step ups.
Or even cooler - is there a location where you could swim, or do water jogging?
I am so not an early morning exerciser.... but maybe I should get up really early and see if it's cooler then. I have been drinking ahead of time. I think it's just plain endurance... and I just don't have it. Am hoping when it cools off I will be AMAZED at how much faster I am.
I feel your pain Uber. In the UK it's nothing like as hot as it is in the US, but to me it's still hot lately.
One thing I do which has helped is fill my water bottle half full and freeze it, then when I'm ready for my run I fill it up all the way with water. Then the bottle is lovely and cold to carry and I swap between hands to keep them cool, and the ice melts as I run which keeps the water cold and refreshing. I just sip as I go along, and you can even hold the bottle to your forehead on back of neck etc to cool you down a little.
Depending on the heat it doesn't always stay frozen all the run, but definitely helps stop the water being warm as soon as I'm out of the door.
Uber, by la-la land do you mean Los Angeles? I know here in DC we have days with really poor air quality, and they really warn you not to exercise outdoors, and that if you do, early morning is much better than evening. If you are in LA, you might look into the daily air quality and see if you're taking a bunch of smog into your lungs when you run at that time of day. Here they do Code Yellow, Orange and Red, and there is an urban legend that running an hour on a code red day is like smoking a pack of cigarettes.
I've really struggled with running in the heat too. I started out with a much shorter run than normal, about a mile and have gradually worked up to 2.5 miles in the heat. You're not alone...
You aren't alone with not being a morning person, but I'm one that has just been sucking it up and getting my exercise in at 5:30am instead of the evenings so that I can run in the heat.
If you do continue running, please make sure you don't over heat. I know of people who are ok running until they puke - but I'm not that type, and since I live in a hot climate, I see and hear about people who have heat stroke, so when I hear that a 2 mile run leaves you wanting to puke, it makes me worry.
Just be sure you stay safe and keep your health in mind. Don't over do it in the heat.
If you keep trying your best, one cool day you'll find yourself doing triple the distance and you'll be really pleased with yourself!!! (Happened to me last fall, running in the evening when I typically did it at noonish)
