Default HEAT and Motivation

Hi all,
I am finding that since it is SOOO hot out now, I am having problems getting myself motivated to go and work out. (The gym I work out at is air conditioned, but since it is sooo hot outside, for some reason I am just really unmotivated to 'go there' -in the hot car- and then get hot and sweaty. I am sure I am probably just making excuses, but up until now I have been really regular and good about working out. Tonight I was thinking of going swimming as my workout instead of doing the Elliptical and/or bike which I usually do.

I am just wondering if any others are having this problem of motivation with the heat. Also, if anyone has any ideas of how to combat it, that would be appreciated. I think the swimming idea is a decent one. Changing the hours of when I go might be another idea. Anyway, just kind of wondering if this is something that anyone else is struggling with--even if you don't have ideas on how to combat it!

I feel the exact same way. In the past couple of weeks my motivation has gone down the drain. I am trying to either workout in the morning or at night when the sun isnt beating down. good luck!

I've been working out in 100 degree sunshine. I have to give myself a pep talk practically the entire time. Today was rough but I don't really like treadmills eitherl. Blech. I may have to learn to like it a bit more though. Does your gym have a shower so you could cool off before getting in the car? If they have a pool I assume they probably have a shower. You could get in cold water before you go outside.

I ended up using the pool. I'm not much of a swimmer though, so I feel like it is not that great of a workout for me. Still better than doing nothing. The water did feel great though. I did some laps and some arm work with the water aerobics Styrofoam resistance hand weight things.

Jenny, Good for you getting into the pool. I live in a very hot area that is hot 9 months out of the year. It does take motivation. But actually, I find I work out more in the summer months in the heat than I do in the winter months. I love the outdoors and in the winter when the sun sets early it hinders alot of the outdoor activity.

One thing I do is reward myself with a dip in the pool after my workout. So I'll go biking, weights, etc then jump in the pool. Its a great way to cool down after the workout. (but I also have my own pool, which is convienent).

In the hotter months I tend to do more biking than running. Because of the airflow on the bike, it helps keep me cooler and I can regulate my body temp better.

I also switch up my running days to early morning or late evening (before/after sunrise/set). I can't do it in the sun.

Ooohhhh, I'm jealous that you have your own pool. That would be soo nice. (especially if where you live it is generally hot out throughout the year).

The pool did feel great yesterday. Today my side obliques are even a little sore. (I imagine from swimming or doing twists in the water).

See - the pool is useful! You'd be amaze at the workout you can get in the pool. And its low impact so easy on the joints. And because you remain cool, your body temp stays cool and you don't feel yourself sweeting, its much more refreshing.

I may have a pool but its not good for swimming laps. 5 strokes and I'm at the other end, but I can get my heartrate up and one of these days I'll find a good water aerobics video that I can use to motivate me in the pool.
