Am I just weird or do other people have strange habits too?
Okay, so maybe I'm alone here...but I've found that I'm developing strange little habits to keep me from over eating...especially when I'm at home (where I tend to pay way more attention to the television than I do to my plate).
For example? I eat with my fingers....a lot. Take this morning for example; I woke up STARVING so had a Jimmy Dean De-lite turkey sausage sandwich (only 290 calories and usually really filling)...but then my brain tried tricking me into thinking that I was still hungry, so I popped open a can of mandrin oranges (in water..no sugar added) and after dumping out the liquid, I poured them in a bowl and ate them with my fingers...for me, scooping them up with a spoon gets them in my mouth so fast that I don't have time to 'think' about what I'm eating..I just shovel it in. Using my fingers (only at home..it's not like I'm eating salad at a restaraunt with my fingers!) seems to slow me down and give me time to realize what I'm eating...as a result, I eat less.
Does anyone else have any little strange idiosyncracies that they do to fool themselves?
I ate with chopsticks for a long time just because they forced me to slow down and engage mentally with what I was eating. And yes, it looks exceptionally odd to eat lasagna with chopsticks.
I always determined how much i wanted to eat, then I cut in half. Even if I wanted more, I would push it away. As long as I got my body's necessary calories, I did great! Took me a year on the dot to drop 115 lbs!
when I was younger, I used to get those tiny little tasting spoons from Baskin Robbins and use them to eat my whole cup of ice cream to make it last longer - I hadn't remembered about that until I saw this thread. I need to think about similar things I could do now - I'm not really that fast an eater but I take bigger bites than I could. I watch my 5 year old son take these tiny little bites and sometimes I get frustrated that he'll take so long to eat something, esp. if I need him to finish so we can leave or whatever. But on the other hand, he's the one who is underweight, so I should think about what I can learn from him!

haha, I used to do this too! But I hate eating with big spoons.
Besides it's cute and pink, so there's not much to hate!
I eat with my fingers too! For me it makes even ordinary foods like a pudding cup feel a lot more fun and indulgent because you're not "supposed" to eat them with your fingers.
I've also bought some colorful ramekins I sometimes serve things in. Part of it's that one serving of a lot of foods can feel underwhelming and tiny in normal bowls but fill a ramekin. Again, there's also that feeling of making the food special by serving it in a colorful little bowl. (Something about small things just feels that way. Maybe it's because we have small servings at parties? Who knows.)
I've found that throwing away leftovers or things that I KNOW I shouldn't indulge in too often prevents me from eating them randomly at another part of the day. I hate doing it (there are starving children in africa, ya know) but it definitely helps.
I also do the small spoon thing! I even eat my ice cream with a fork!
The only thing I do is at restaurants...I get dressing on the side and dip my fork in the dressing and then grab a bite of salad. Oh, sometimes I count my chews so I slow down.....like when eating meat I will chew twenty times before swallowing.

My son who is 9, uses the little spoons from B&K when he eats his icecream! He says it makes him feel like his one little scoop is a BIG scoop.

What an excellent idea. I love eating with chopsticks and it would really force me to have to take my time and enjoy my food.
