As you can see by my weight graph, I'm still very heavy.
I had surgery on my right knee and find squat-type movements are painful. So, I stopped. Don't want to re-injure my knee.
But I know the thigh and glute muscles are the biggest and burn a lot of energy...so, I am asking for some help in doing the right exercises to use these muscles without causing injury.
Walking is not often an option for me, so I need something to do indoors. Finances are very limited so gyms and equipment are out.
If you recently had surgery did your surgeon send you to see a physio therapist, to show you the proper exercises to do in your particular circumstance? I think you should see a professional, you don't want to twist your knee and screw it up because of a suggestion of an exercise that worked for one person with a totally different knee problem, there are too many particulars in each circumstance to make a blanket suggestion on line...Please see a professional...
I agree with Ilene. The worst thing you could do is try something that makes your situation worse, especially if your goal is to live healthy and be physically fit. No need to rush yourself through the healing process. Make sure you eat healthy and it will come together soon enough.
How about using a balance ball? They often come with a sheet of paper the shows the different types of exercises you can do or sometimes you can get a dvd.
After your surgery did you get PT and were you taught the exercises to help strengthen the muscles around your knees? And have you been keeping up with them?
If not, you would benefit from some PT to get proper training on how to handle your knee so you can strengthen them and be able to work within your limitations.
Other suggestions would be biking, swimming, eliptical and other lower impact cardio
After posting I found a great thread on here (now closed) with lots of good information specifically geared to (weak, injured, recovering, etc.) knees.
i'd also really recommend swimming for cardio. I damaged my knee when I was about 15 and swam from then on for a few years until it had healed properly (it was growing pains because my joints weren't growing as fast as the rest of me or something like that).
Also Pilates is a great muscle workout. You can download dvds from the net. Pilates for Dummies is a good one
MissNibs-I highly recommend the Walk Away The Pounds DVDs by Leslie Sansone. They are available online or at Wal Mart, etc. I have had 2 surgeries on my right knee, I have arthritis and cannot squat at all....for work, gardening or anything else. I began using the Walk Away The Pounds (WATP) DVDs in February to supplement my other lifestyle changes and have never felt better. Just about anyone can do the workouts on these DVDs. They are inexpensive and can be done in the privacy of your own home.
I am so thankful I found this type of workout.....it works great for me!!
