Exclamation to all of you who said....

.... "oh spin class is sooooo much fun!"
I don't like you anymore!

I "accidentally" took my first spin class yesterday morning. Shopped all day afterwards on jello legs. There is not one spot on me not sore. legs and foot (obviously), shoulders (from the death grip I had on the handles while in stand up mode so as not to fall off), and the all time favorite: bruised butt bone: gives a whole new meaning to ba ba ba bad to the bone!

How does one accidentally take a spin class you ask? I went for a beginning step class thinking I have been working out and wanted to push myself slllloooowwwlllly. "Turtle Power!" That instructor wasn't there so the spin instructor convinced me to join in.

Oh, I forgot the best part! The class is held in the basement of the Y (with a forest mural and mood lighting: my favorite part because you can't see everyone else in all their tortured radiance and they can't see you!) however the part you don't realize until it is too late.... you have to leave the same way you came in . UP the stairs!!! 18 to be exact (I counted) very steep steps on jello legs. By step #10, I was wishing for an elevator, escalator, helicopter, anything!

Anyway, notice I wrote FIRST spin class, yes ladies, I am going back for more..... pray for me! It was an awesome workout and I was able to keep up, something I would have NEVER been able to do a few months ago!

Jennifer, I am working up to a Spin class too.....my goal is to do at least 2 in July to see how I really like it.....I'll be looking forward to hearing about your next one...and you should be proud of yourself for going back!

Now you've got me excited to try it . . . I just signed up at Goodlife Fitness because they have a Jump prgram for kids. I wanted to get Jack (my son) used to activity and get him to like it - they have a spin class . . . . hmmmmm . . .

Congrats to you for going back .. I tried Yoga a while back had one bad class and its taken me 3 years to go back .. My class starts in two weeks ..

I thought for sure spin class wouldn't be for me until I was at least in onederland, but I guess not!
Those bikes were alot sturdier that I thought!

Is the gel seat a cover? I am not sure I can change the seat.

Ok...best...post...today!!!! LOL!

My first spin class brought me all that soreness as well, and the next morning my ARMS hurt so bad I could not even buckle my seatbelt, and didn't! I couldn't lift my arm to work the turn signal...and didn't!! There's a hairpin turn I have to take on my way to work...I can't describe in writing what I had to do to turn the steering wheel far enough to make the turn. What about spin class kills the arms?

Word of caution about the gel seat: If it doesn't fit properly, it may actually hurt your back. So if you get one and find your back starts to hurt, just ditch the gel seat. It only takes a couple workouts for the rear end to adjust to the regular seat.

Also, take the class at your own pace and work up to what everyone else is doing! No one knows how much resistance is on your bike. Also, I personally still find "running" in position two difficult. I'm getting there in position three. I've learned that it's easier to "run" with more resistance. Your legs may not be going as fast as everyone else's, but you're still getting an effective workout.

For the next couple classes, I suggest sitting up without your hands on the handle bars as much as possible. It works the core and is hard at first, but again, this gets easier. It also accomplishes two things: One, it allows your arms to heal. Your arms aren't supposed to hurt when you're finished. Two, it teaches you about having a light touch on the bar, therefore protecting those shoulders and arms in the future.
