I am going tonight with my girlfriends for our Mom's Night Out. I was thinking the Mamacita's salad without eating the shell it comes in OR the grilled chicken burger. I want to be higher in protein than carbs. I will drink water with lemon. Any suggestions?
I get steak if I am not sure what to get. However, at Mexican restaurants I like to get the fajitas and eat mostly the meat, onion and bell pepper, some rice and skip the sour cream, tortillas, and other high calorie sides.
My fall-back Tex-Mex meal is the fajitas, and not use the tortillas. But with this restaurant, I'd probably get the Pasion de Mar (blackened red snapper), or the Pechugas de Pollo (sounds really yummy!), or the Tequila Lime Salmon. If I wanted salad I'd go for the Empanizada salad or the chicken caesar salad. Whatever I got, I'd probably ask for la charra beans and sauteed mushrooms as my sides. There are a lot of choices I would enjoy and that would fit into my plan.
I would probably go with the steak and ask for a side salad with dressing on the side. IMO, Mexican restaurants are one of the toughest places to stay on-plan.
I'm probably a huge pain in the butt to all waitresses at Mexican restaurants, but my standby is, and I order it whether it's on the menu or not LOL: Soft chicken taco with a corn tortilla, no cheese, no sour cream, side of pico de gallo, sides of black beans, or any beans not refried, and rice.
I take the pico and add a lot of it to my taco (love it!), and also mix it into the black or other non-refried beans. I eat a couple scoops of rice, but try to stop there.
Looks good ... lots of fried things but really, things prepared every which way. The blackened red snapper with spices. Charbroiled chicken breast (comes with fries, but you know, request none or just do what I do -- eat 3 of them and that's all). Sauteed vegetarian fajitas (ditto sides -- but you know, you can take care of that).
I hardly ever eat Mexican. So out of ignorance/caution I'd probably avoid anything carb-y as well as usual suspects like creamy, etc. Just from gazing over the menu, I'd be unsure of size and method of preparing things like tortillas, rice.

Reason: wordiness ;-)
Thanks for the suggestions. I might be more confused now. LOL I thought about steak because I know it is protein, but red meat is higher in calories. Some sort of fish would be good too! Oh no!!! I guess I really won't know until I get there. I have decided to bring my measuring spoon for the 1 tblspoon size - so I can measure my salad dressing that they will bring on the side!
I'd choose one of the blackened/charbroiled fish or chicken options and have them hold the butter and sauces. It may sound boring, but I love food that way if it's cooked and seasoned well. I prefer to savor the natural flavor of food, and bonus, it is better for you that way.
If you want a tortilla, ask for corn in place of flour, and get it without all the butter/oil they would typically use.
