I feel like i am having PMS every few days and I know that losing mass amounts of weight can cause hormonal problems but I was wondering did anyone's dr suggest putting them on birth control to manage hormonal swings?
I am begining to seriously consider asking my surgeon about it soon then going through my regular dr and getting an annual done and see if they will perscribe them.
I am irritable, anxious, moody and I snap a lot, I want to cry for no reason and I feel hyped up but tired.... just like i do with PMS (just had my period a week ago -it was late-so it shouldn't be that)
This is NOT fair to my BF who hasn't done anything wrong but I find myself having to strain not to snap at him and others, one minute I am happy and the next I am teary, just like the 2 or so days before my period but now it is at random
Just wondering what other people's experiences with hormonal surges and the like after surgery were.
I've been on hormonal birth control since I was 16 for medical reasons, so I'm not much help, but I sure don't think it would hurt to ask your surgeon/doc about it. Just make sure the doctor who prescribes the birth control fully understands the extent of your malabsorption. Many post-WLS patients don't use the pill due to fear of potentially not absorbing it all. Some swear they've used it and not had any problems, but I wasn't willing to take that chance, especially given my medical history of major ovarian cyst issues, so I'm now using the NuvaRing. I'm not sure what your future family plans are, but that is also a factor in deciding on a type of birth control. For example, I opted against the Depo shot because it can take up to 18 months AFTER you stop using it to become fertile again, and I want to start having kids in the next year or so (that, and Depo is known to increase appetite).
Anyway, lots to consider. Of course, you could always just ride it out because, honestly, some hormonal birth control methods CAUSE more hormonal issues for some women, so if you add that factor in right now, you never know what might happen! So, yes, talk to your gyn about it.
Yes, talk to your surgeon and your obgyn as soon as you can. Losing a lot of weight can reek havoc on your system. I didn't get my period for 3 months after I had surgery and then it was every two weeks, then two months.. you get the picture. Anyway, after have been at the same weight for quite some time, my visits got pretty normal....AND THEN MEAN-O-PAUSE started to set in LOL.. can't win I tell yah LOLOL.
Fat cells store estrogen-so it makes sense that as you lose weight you are releasing all sorts of estrogen into your system (just a guess). So I agree-talk to your docs and see what they can do. I can't imagine perpetual PMS! Sounds awful . . . .
I havent had the surgery but I started taking bc pills to manage my periods because my weight was so high it pretty much stopped my periods. So although the pill made me regular, after being on it for about 8 months I was depressed and anxious and i was honestly a b*tch so I stopped but now I think the hormones in the pill have messed with my own hormones. So I suggest you research all the pills first and see which one you think will work best for you. My gyno just prescribed me Loestrin and after taking it I read online that its not really meant for young women and has the highest amount of male hormones. I know many women take the pill with no problems at all but I wish I would have did my own research before just taking what he gave me. Your body may be able to level out its own hormones. Good luck with everything!
Thanks for the input everyone, I am begining to think one of the biggest problems is that my wellbutron, I am now taking four 100 mg pills and they are VERY coated so I bought a pill splicer after looking up if you can split them (the only problem is sometimes they can make your tongue numb a bit) and now I am splicing them in half and I already notice a difference in a day or so.
I hope that is it cause at my age (yep 41) I really dont need to be adding anymore hormones to the mix....yet......lol

I hadn't even thought about your other medications - good call! I cut my iron in half because they are coated and I know I don't have as much acid in my stomach to get through that coating now.
I am going to talk to my gyno next week about possibly getting on the pill. Not only is my weight loss wreaking havoc with my hormones, my daughter just started her periods in December. So, between the two, I'm totally out of whack. I need help!!!
basketcase- with your daughter entering womanhood - you don't need hormones - you need ALCOHOL!!! and that's a politically incorrect thing to say on a WLS info board!!!
