Default Vegetarian College Student New to the Community - Hello all!

Hi guys! My name is Kathryn. I am 21 years old, 5’ 10”, 200lbs., and currently a student and filmmaker/artist who finally has some spare time on her hands! After enduring a hectic semester, yesterday was officially my last day of school until the fall. As a reward, after months of waiting (I signed up back in February), I have finally given myself the time to do this! I’m so excited!

Here’s a (hopefully) quick run-down of my weight history:

Growing up, I was always a bigger girl. From preschool up until fifth grade, I was one of, if not THE, tallest kids in the class at (5’ 7”+ in fifth grade). So, I had been used to people making fun of my size from time to time. But around third through fifth grade, I was tipping the scales at well over 240lbs. (my highest weight was 265 at age 12). My classmates constantly made fun of me; whispering comments about me, yelling hateful names on the playground, spiteful glances in the lunch line – it all hurt so very much. Long story short, it ruined my time at school and devastated me emotionally. Events followed that led up to the decision that I should be home schooled (in addition to the bullying at school, there was stress at home – both of my parents had health issues). What a life changing move!

At age 13, I decided, “Okay, this is it. I’m THROUGH with being unhealthy!” So, I took on exercising daily, and adopted a vegetarian lifestyle, with a minimal intake of sweets or junk food. It was tough… but after just a week or two, it made such a tremendous impact. I was feeling better, I could actually BREATHE, and the food I ate made me feel so full much faster than what I used to eat. It was WONDERFUL. After a couple of months steadily keeping these habits, I dropped nearly 40 lbs! I couldn’t believe it! As the years progressed, I continued with these practices, my inspiration to leave my past behind me and become the person I have always wanted to be…

And I feel that it worked. In about three year’s time, at 17 years old, I had gone from weighing 265lbs. to 155lbs.

At 21, I am still a loyal vegetarian (8 years strong; though I do eat fish now – I have needed the protein) who LOVES exercise. However, during the past year, my healthy habits have fallen wayside; with college and work being a huge focus, as well as moving out of my parents’ apartment and in with my boyfriend, my usual lifestyle has become unraveled. I have hardly exercised AT ALL like I used to in the past year, have eaten at fast food establishments on a regular basis, and went from about 170lbs. last summer to about 200lbs today. GAH! WHAT HAPPENED?!?

I hope to once again get back in shape, and become even healthier than I was before. So, with an open mind and great enthusiasm, I can’t wait to share advice, experiences, and most of all, support with all of you here at the 3 Fat Chicks on a Diet community. Thank you all for being here, and I'm so excited to get to know you! Have a fantastic day!

- Kathryn

Welcome Kathryn, I'm new too!

Good luck and I'd be interested to know what some of your favorite vegetarian protein sources are since that's the direction I'm leaning in more and more!

Thank you, Onderchic and HopefulandHappy!

@HopefulandHappy: That's great to hear! For years, I've really just stuck with sources such as tofu in varied forms, as well as vegetarian 'meats' like Boca burgers and other offerings, but there are all sorts of great foods out there that I would love to discover.

Recently, I have been learning quite a bit from my boyfriend's mother who is very knowledgeable about other proteins too. The more that I discover, I'll be happy to keep you informed!
