Default Protein Breakfast for Picky Eater

Reading the thread about breakfast today made me think alot about how my breakfast makes me feel. The answer to that would defnitely be "hungry".

But, my problem is, and has always been, that I am a VERY picky eater. There are alot of *normal* foods that I absolutely will not touch. It makes it difficult when eating at other people's houses, eating out, and of course, eating a protein breakfast.

Here's why:
  • I don't like eggs
  • I don't like yogurt (I can choke this down if I have to)
  • I don't like cottage cheese
  • I don't like peanut butter
  • I don't like mayo, or anything with mayo as an ingredient (Not a breakfast thing, but mayo touches so many foods that it can be a challenge)

Right now my breakfast consists of either a bagel thin w/ Laughing Cow or Low Sugar Oatmeal. I'd eat an orange with these, too.

I'm quite the challenge! Anyone have any high protein breakfast ideas for my warped taste buds?

Eat dinner food at breakfast! There's no reason you can't eat whatever meat or other protein you would normally eat at dinner for breakfast. I often have a piece of salmon with breakfast. Some folks will eat a steak with breakfast. It's also a great way to use leftovers!

Protein shake, preferably sugar-free, made with milk.

Or a shake made of protein powder and frozen fruit, blended.

Long-term, if you can get past the decision to be a picky eater and train yourself to like a wider variety of foods, then eating healthfully will be much easier for you.

I have a friend who HATES cottage cheese. I forgot one time, and I did a fruit and cottage cheese thing where you use a food processor on the cottage cheese until it's smooth. Then, you mix in your fruit, and I added a half a packet of splenda per serving. She commented on how good it was. It wasn't until a week later when I was talking about having cottage cheese as a snack that I was reminded that she can't stand cottage cheese as a general rule. Who knows? Maybe it would work for you.

But what other people have said is true. The only reason breakfast food is breakfast food is because we've conditioned ourselves to think so.

I don't think I could face fish in the morning, though.

Yeah what they said

I'm another one that doesn't like cottage cheese unless I use it for lasagna! It's a texture thing for me.

I thought I didn't like cottage cheese until I tried the "full fat" version. It's still low-cal/high protein,, but it's much better.

I also put wheat bran in it (sawdust) which changes the texture a great deal (while adding fiber). but it's not something everyone will like.

The other thing about cottage cheese is that you really can flavor the crap out of it: I use LOTS of splenda, and cinnamon, and sometimes ginger and nutmeg and cloves.

But it may not be for you. I didn't like it for years, now I do.

I agree with the others, it doesn't have to be "breakfast" food. I like a FF refried bean burrito, add a bit of cheese and some fresh onion and salsa!

Tanee, I hate cottage cheese unless it is in lasagne too

One thing you could try is eating one of those protein bars in the morning. You could also get some protein powder and make your own smoothies in the morning.

Regular cheese is a good breakfast food, too. I keep cheddar cheese on hand, and some mornings a quick breakfast is a "hunk o' cheese" and a handful of pecans.

Turkey sandwich on sandwich thins with low fat cheese or no cheese and mustard. Sticks with me for a long time! Some mornings I just can't do "breakfast foods" either!

Mmmm...cheese. You guys are speaking my language!

And with cottage cheese, it is definitely a texture thing. I can eat it just fine if it's hidden in something like lasagne. Eumie, I wonder if I'd like one of your shakes? Since it's blended the texture shouldn't be a problem.

Good ideas, everyone! See, I knew if I asked you I'd get some good options. You guys rock!

I agree.. don't think "breakfast food", I like the idea of a turkey sandwhich. We also eat BLTs in this house for breakfast a lot of times on the weekends (with turkey bacon of course )

Not too long ago I was watching a show on Discovery Health, and the lady had lost a ton of weight.. how?? She switched the whole familys meals "backwards". They would eat dinner for breakfast (she would get up early and cook fish and chicken and other healthy dinner foods). They would eat their highest calorie meal in the morning and the lowest at night.. which kind of makes sense.

See, and I LOVE fat-free cottage cheese. I eat it every morning while I'm reading emails at work - I drain the "juice" off of one of those little travel cups of no sugar added Del Monte diced peaches, the dump those on top and off I go. I LOVE it, I actually look forward to it on a daily basis.

Turkey bacon is yummy, as is turkey sausage. I probably wouldn't eat them every day, but maybe chopped up in a low-cal tortilla with some ff cheese, salsa and other "breakfast burrito" type fixings?

I don't eat any of the things you don't eat either.

How do you feel about almond butter? Hummus?

I think sprouted grain bread with hummus is an awesome breakfast For the past couple days, I've been doing protein shakes. I have hemp protein powder mixed with a little cocoa powder and water and it is yum.

I'm loving these ideas. And Hummus? I could eat it at every meal. Seriously. Yum. Why didn't I think of that before?
