I have wondered the opposite. You know those tattoos that go all the way around the arm, how do they look when someone gains weight? A younger friend of mine was thinking about getting one of those around the arm tattoos. I held my arm up, jiggled the underarm and asked her what would happen to a tattoo if her arm got like mine. She got a tattoo on her ankle.
*sigh* I've been worried about this. I've got one on my side and I would be REALLY sad to have to get it removed or something (or, god, if I had to get skin removed I'd have like half a tattoo or something stupid). Anybody have any pics of tattoos at goal weight?
That is the main reason I haven't gotten one...what happens when..... I use to want one on my hip/behind, Then I thought, hmmmm, I could get one on my shoulder and then by the time I am 60, it would be around my hip.
I've been thinking about getting a tattoo when I get to goal, and several friends have encouraged me not to wait (some have gained and lost weight with tatoos and said it did shrink/enlarge proportionally or that there was no difference).
I went in to the primo tattoo shop in our area and asked some of the tattoo artists, and they said it really depends where you get it. Some locations are more (or less) prone to distortion than others. Also some tattoos are more prone to distortion effects. For example if you have a tattoo of a person or cartoon face, changes could be more noticeable than with say a celtic knotwork tattoo.
I have three tattoos, but none of them are in places that would be affected. One on my wrist, one between my shoulder blades, and one on my back shoulder area. My wrist better not shrink or there will be nothing left of it, my wrists are so tiny. And my back is the one sexy part of my body that has no fat (or very little anyway).
I love the look of tattoos going up the sides, I know lots of people that have them done, but I'd have to say that's one I wouldn't do because I'd be afraid of it. I know one girl who is 7 months pregnant and has one. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like after the baby.
My ex-mother-in-law always reminded me not to get a tattoo around/above the breasts because her short stemmed rose from years ago, has become a very long stemmed rose as things started their downward decent. :P
My daughter is fit, 19 and beautiful. She is built exactly like I was at her age but she is a few inches shorter than I am. She sooo wants to get a tattoo on her lower back, the "tramp stamp" AND she wants to get her belly button pierced.
When she asked my opinion, I told her I was glad I didn't get a tattoo there or my belly button pierced when I was young, fit and hot! As I've gained 100 lbs, it would have wrecked the tattoo and my belly button would look ridiculous all stretch marked and flabby with a ring in it! LOL I told her I thought getting either of those done would be a good incentive to stay in shape, as it would look like crap if a person gained weight.
I am not anti-tattoo, I have one myself but am glad I didn't get it anywhere that gains and shrinks. Mine is on the ubiquitous ankle tattoo and has stayed the same size for 10 years. My ankles and wrists are the only places that haven't gotten fat.
I have one one the back of my neck, one on my right shoulder, one on my mid back, one on webbing between thumb and finger of right hand and a wedding ring on my left ring finger and one on the upper part of my left pec (or what would be a pec if it wasnt the upper slope of breast). They all look normal. The neck one is fairly large and intricate and actually goes down part of my back, hasnt had any issues. I actually had the 'fat lady' hump when i got it, and as I've lost, I lost there and it didn't affect the ink. I can understand how a hip, butt, side, stomach, leg ink would be affected though, just by eyeing the skin results. My piercings havent been affected either, maybe because I got them at the higher end of my weight? Who knows, but they're normal looking, not stretched out, gaping or funky looking, though I have seen some on people where I kinda have to think, "what the bloody **** were you thinking?", but when I asked them, and I do, because I have the tact of a 2 yo, they usually tell me they did it at home or their buddy did it ~eyeroll~
I think it depends on where it is. I mean I have a friend who had a tattoo of vines adround her belly button. Then she had babies and got small again. You can't tell what it is anymore. But then it also depends on your genetics and skin. I know another girl who had a big one on the side of her belly and she gaind alot and lost alot and it was fine.
I have 2 - 1 above my left breast and one on the outside of my right thigh. They are both fine so far. The one on my chest looks like it is a bit higher than when I was a FF (I'm a D now), but it is still properly shaped and still matches my husband's (we have matching tats that we got on our wedding night). The one on my leg is showing no changes that I can see. I have noticed that sometimes I can feel the lines of it raised more than usual, especially if I have a particularly large whoosh, so I figure that something about the ink makes the fat cells under it hold on just a tiny bit longer than the others. It smooths out in a few days.
