I take Synthroid daily for mine. Its borderline (I can't remember the numbers) but my dr said that if its enough to where I feel symptoms that are uncomfortable, we should treat it. The meds bring me back 90%. I still struggle with fatigue and some of the other symptoms a bit but now I can function! I was like you - I ignored it for too long thinking it was because I had gained weight. That didn't help, but it wasn't it. Treating for a low thyroid can be more than just counteracting your symptoms - ther are long term health consequences. Ask your dr what is best for you, but its more than just anti-fatigue meds. Good luck!!

Welcome to 3FC and congrats on the six pounds lost! That's a great way to start. I'm glad you've been to your doc and they're looking at your numbers. I don't know much about slow thyroid, except what I hear from other posters like yourself.

Let us know how it goes, and what you need to be doing. We can certainly help with encouragement, recipes, and listening ears. I hope you post often!

5.1 is really almost being underactive. I think the scale goes to 5.5. I"m surprised they didn't give you a small does to try to move it to a better range. I have hypothyroid and take synthroid daily since Aug 2005. I get re-tested every 6 months or whenever I feel like the symptoms are getting out of control. Most of the time when I "think" it might be off it's not, but once I nailed it on the head and got bounced up to 50 mcg from 25. If I'd have waited for my regular bloodwork it'd have been another 3 months!
