I have been looking forward to my Greek yogurt, blueberries and walnuts all morning! Greek is a taste I'm trying to acquire. I like it doctored up a bit.
Much to my disappointment, I find I have accidentally purchased PLAIN yogurt. Blech, blech, blech!!
I was so mad, let me tell you. LOL! Don't mess with my snack! But I have now doctored it further with honey, and now we're good.
You can strain plain yogurt to give it a thick texture, like Greek yogurt. It strains out the whey and so technically it makes it higher protein and have fewer carbs per serving.
I can't have artificial sweeteners because they give me migraines, so I'm stuck with full sugar yogurts, but I find them too sweet these days. So I switched to Greek for that and several other reasons (higher protein). But it has too little sugar. I need something in between. So what I really like best is half a container of Greek mixed with 1/4 container of my old standard. I'm weaning myself off that though, and trying to go with full Greek. I like it ok with berries, quite a bit actually.
I know I will eventually like it. It's more of a texture problem than anything else, so I need to desensitize myself to it. I guess plain was just more than I could handle.
Eliana, have you ever tried some agave syrup. It's a low glycemic index food and it comes in different flavores that could compliment your berries. High in calories, but very very sweet so a little will go a long way. Also, have you tried xylitol? You can buy this at the health food store too. I don't know if you would get migraines from it but maybe you could investigate it. It has zero calories and is also very sweet.
I like my berries sweetened and then I enjoy the contrast between the greek yogurt and the sweetened berries. Depending on my calories count for the day I alternate between the agave and xylitol.
And of course, honey always works!
Sounds like you have a good plan for weaning yourself off full sugar yogurts. I'm with you--they're way too sweet for me too.
I'm trying to like greek yogurt also .. it seems to take me longer to eat though if you keep taking bites of it it starts to taste sour to me .. so take a bite do something else take a bite and so on .. lol lasts me a half hour at lease .. i bought the dannon one w/ honey and it was really good and the dannon seemed more satisfying then the Oikos one but dannon had more calories .. the plain is DISGUSTING .. hope you find a way to fix it up
Oh boy, I haven't had yogurt for a while...it sounds good. I like straining the plain low fat one untill it looks like cream cheese, and spreading it on some flatbread with a dollup(... did I spell that right?) of jam, or a couple of olives.
I love plain Greek yogurt with just a bit of honey, myself! Stupidly I forgot to buy any Greek yogurt at the grocery store this weekend - husband took care of the dairy aisle and he only eats regular.
My problem is that to date I've only found one brand that I like--Fage. I LOVE to have fage with strawberries, but every time we've gotten another brand, my husband has had to eat it all, because it tastes like liquid feta to me. Don't get me wrong, I love feta cheese, but you get little bites of it at a time, not a heaping spoonful of that flavor.
I second the agave suggestion. It is lower gi than honey, imo tastes a lot like honey, and it doesn't take very much to sweeten things up.
I use plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream - I make a mean shrimp taco! Our podunk grocery store only carries Dannon brand, and I may be the only person buying it, so it's the only brand I've tried and I don't know how long before they'll stop carrying it. How long before I'll be driving 20 miles to find a store that carries MY brands?
One of my favorite lunch treats is to fill one of my little lunch boxes with greek yogurt, and top it with frozen mixed berries, the night before I take it to work (and refrigerate it overnigt). By the time lunch rolls around next day, the berries have not only thawed, but created a lovely juice-y sauce to have with my yogurt. Yum!
