One year since my hybrid DS

  • Yup, it's been just over a year now (surgery date: 3/27/09). I'm down about 100 pounds but still have more to lose. I bounce around between about 207-211 (was 308.5 on the morning of surgery). I am solidly in a misses size 16, but still shop the clearance racks for plus size 14s as well (not because I need them, but because I'll buy whatever's cheapest!).

My type 2 diabetes is not "cured," but it is certainly very well controlled. Would things be different in that department if I had a shorter common channel? Possibly. If the diabetes becomes difficult to control again in the future, I may potentially seek information on a revision to my intestinal configuration (probably from Dr. Baltasar in Spain since he is a bit of an expert int he are of the DS for diabetes as opposed to the DS as merely a WLS procedure).

Other than that, I'm feeling good. I have no food intolerances. If I eat too many starchy carbs at once (not sugar, but things like bread, potatoes, pasta, etc.), I'll have gas, but that's it. I have not vomitted once since I left the hospital from my surgery, and I've not had diarrhea except when I was sick with a bug. I battled constipation for a bit, but I no longer take stool softeners daily, and things seem to have sort of worked themselves out in that department.

Some fabulous things I'm sure anyone who's ever lost a significant amount of weight can appreciate:
    • I no longer fear booths in restaurants. Or movie theater seats, airplane seats, stadium seats, etc. I fit. I fit EVERYWHERE a normal person should fit. Based on this, I am planning a trip to an amusement park with my husband in the next month or so. Despite my love for roller coasters, I haven't been on one in at least 5 years due to fear of not fitting in the seat/restraints.
    • I don't get annoyed at having to go upstairs or downstairs to get something. I just do it, and I don't get winded from the single flight of stairs. Heck, I've even been known to go from the basement to the bedroom now (2 flights) without complaining!
    • I play with my dogs more. They are small, so it's not like wrestling or anything, but just running back and forth through the house, throwing the ball, etc. It's good for all involved.
    • We still eat out 7 days a week. Yup, I sill hate cooking (and cleaning up afterwards). But I can find a protein-packed meal ANYWHERE. I don't always have leftovers to bring home anymore. I still focus on protein first, and, depending on what I order, I can sometimes now eat the entire portion of protein on my plate, and I'm not going to just bring home leftover side dishes, so a restaurant meal is often only a single meal for me now. For example, last night, we went to Outback. I got the pork tenderloin with sides of French green beans and a baked sweet potato. I was able to eat all of the meat and only a couple bites of the beans and potato. There was so much food left on the plate that the server asked if I wanted a box, but I had already eaten the pork, so I said no.
So, overall, I'm still annoyed that I didn't get the DS I wanted, and I may seek out a revision in the future, but for now, I can't really complain!
  • Glad to hear you're doing well, Jill! Took a flight to Las Vegas a few weeks ago and looked at the seats and the bathroom and still had the passing thought, "Will I fit?" I know I will, but the thought is still there! hehehe
