My wonderful amazing boyfriend is in Iraq, and shortly after he left, he asked me my ring size. We were talking about getting married, so it wasn't too much of a surprise. It's pretty much established that we're engaged, we just haven't gone through the formality of proposing etc, and of course that's being postponed by him being deployed. Well I don't wear rings often, so I went to a jewelry store and had my ring finger sized. It was a 7.5, and this is before I had lost any significant amount of weight. I gave him this information.

Well, just a few weeks ago, I accidentally found out that he has gotten a ring (whooole other story). He doesn't know I know, and none of my friends know I know. Nobody knows that I know, lol. So I have to suffer in silence just about exploding with joy, and I can't tell ANYbody until he proposes when he's on leave in July. So I know for a fact that he has gotten a ring, I'm naturally going to assume that he got a 7.5 since that's what I told him.

I was in the mall by myself today, and just for kicks and giggles I went and got my ring sized again at the same store. (I find that I can't stop staring at rings, haha). Well now I'm a 6.5!!!! Oh nooooo! How did my finger shrink a whole size! I feel bad because he flat out asked me what my ring size is, and now it'll be awkward when it's too big They can be resized though, right? Is that horrendously expensive?

Anyways, sorry for the long story...for once, I'm kind of bummed that part of me has gotten smaller, lol.

Early congrats! And most rings can be sized down. Do you happen to know what kind of ring he got? Like did you give him any guidelines? I basically picked out my own ring (and diamond and sidestones) and sent DH the exact specs. LOL!

But back to my point - a solitaire will be easy to size down, no problem. Or it's pretty common for a clueless man to buy the simplest solitaire ring for the proposal, which is basically a placeholder until you go and pick out your own setting.

But the more ornamentation there is, the harder it gets to resize a ring. I think once you get into sidestones, the harder it gets to size. Or if it's titanium I think it's not possible? But that's really a niche market.

I don't know how you're going to keep this a secret until July! I am such a ham, I can't keep anything to myself. Congrats on your awesome weight loss! Just think, it's easier to resize a ring than resize a wedding dress (which is what I had to do).

The difference between a 6 and a 7 ring size isn't actually that large, just 1/2 mm. A larger size is also nice if your fingers tend to swell when you get hot. And a larger size is also better if the ring is wide (meaning, how much of your finger it covers). So, this may not end up being too bad a situation.

Unless a ring has stones all the way around or has intricate engraving or patterning in the metal, it can be easily resized and it doesn't cost too much money (less than $100). If he somehow bought the ring locally in the US, chances are the store would resize it for free.

If it needs resizing and its resizable, its not that expensive.

I had my grandmother's class ring resized up from a 4 to a 10 (which was so too big, i must have been eating boxes of salt to get that result...) a couple years ago for $50. That was adding gold and a fair amount of it. To go down should be cheaper because they are removing the gold.

And I don't think your husband-to-be is really going to be all that concerned once he sees how happy your weight loss has made you!

Thanks guys!!! I'm so utterly thrilled, and it's been near impossible to keep my mouth shut about it. One of my best friends just got engaged for a really quick wedding (month long engagement), and I'm so happy for her, and I want to tell her that I'll be engaged too, but I can't, haha.

I do not know what kind of setting he got. He not-so-subtly asked me "what's the difference between emerald cut and princess cut...and which one is better?" I replied with "well, *personally*, I like princess cut," haha. So other than that and ring size and he knows I like white gold, I don't know what he chose. I trust him though, he has good taste.

So I won't worry about the size then, I suppose. I know the moment will be special either way.

i sized myself the other day... because i want a pinky ring (haha don't laugh!) and my boyfriend's mom was surprised my pinky was a size 5! i think she was a tad jealous too... but yeah, when i had lost weight, i noticed my rings started feeling a tad looser!

As Missy mentioned, some places have a warranty you can purchase that covers things like this. My rings are from Zales and the price of the protection plan was determined by how much the rings cost... It covers any damage, rhodium treatments for my white gold, and sizing up to 2 sizes in either direction. That might be something to check into since it's only a one-time price. For me, having 2 things done would cost about the same as the plan. Without it, I think the sizing would have been $50ish.

My wedding band is a channel band with 11 diamonds and it was initially sized from a 7 to an 8 and turned out perfectly. I also keep up on my diamond warranty (it's separate from the protection plan - I got it automatically, I just have to take my rings in twice a year for inspection) so this way, if the sizing causes the loss of diamonds or something, everything is covered.

Just talk to the jewelry store and find out what your options are.

My rings are getting loose, that's the only thing I find sad about weight loss!!

My boyfriend got me a promise ring, and we got it resized for free from the jewelers. My ring size is a 4.75 (I have skinny fingers..it's weird, and with losing weight it's starting to get lose again!!). It all depends on where he got it from.

If the resizing proves to be some kind of issue and the disparity is not too huge, another option may come once you get your wedding band. My size is a 6.5, which is what my engagement ring is. When we went to get our wedding bands, I ordered a 6.5 for that too. It turns out that my engagement ring, which fits perfectly, was actually a tight 6.5, while the band is a more true 6.5.

The way my set is designed, the band has a slight curve to allow for the larger engagement setting. I wanted to have them soldered together to keep the band from sliping in between my fingers and had them move the band up ever so slightly to match the height of the enagement ring. Problem solved, and no one would ever be able to tell.

You shouldn't have any issues getting it reduced so slightly, though. Congrats in advance!!!

A temporary solution would be a ring guard. My graduation ring is engraved on the inside, so there's really no way for me to get it re-sized (and I love this friggin ring) so I got a ring guard and it works fairly well. They're usually pretty cheap (<$20) at the jewelery store, and they will put it on for you.
