Thanks to anyone who can help me with this! This is a recipe my family enjoys, but I would like to know about how many calories would be in this:
Brown 1 lb. ground turkey (or lean ground beef) Drain and set aside. Cook 1 medium head cabbage (cut into 1 in pieces) until well softened. Add ground turkey, 1 1/2 c minute rice (raw), 1 lg. can tomato juice, oregano and salt to taste. Cook about 20-30 minutes, stirring often.
I hope it is on the healthy side due to the ground turkey and cabbage! Thanks for any help you can offer!
This is the site I use to calculate all my recipes. It will analyze your recipe, give you a nutrition label and tell you how healthy it is. If the item you need is not on file you can create a custom entry for it under "my foods". Don't forget to include how many servings your recipe is for. It can be a bit time consuming but once it's calculated, your recipe is saved for future use
Your recipe sounds like it would be around 200 calories per soup bowl if you use turkey, but it's just a rough estimate.
My Fitday says it would be around 2000 calories for the whole thing. I don't know how many calories per serving, since you didn't mention how many servings you get out of it. It sounds good, like deconstructed Gołąbki (stuffed cabbage).
when I entered it into the daily plate i got 953 cals for the entire thing. So I'm guessing that would make about 4 servings so I'm guessing about 238 cals per serving.. of course there are a lot of variables here what brand ground turkey did you use? was it ground turkey breast or regular ground turkey?, what brand of tomato juice did you use was it a low sodium kind? my calculations were put in on what seemed to be the average for those items..
1 medium head of cabbage 220 - 300 calories
1.5 cups uncooked Minute Rice 480 calories
Tomato Juice 225 - 240 calories calories
1 lb ground beef (90/10) 800 calories
1 lb ground beef (85/15) 975 calories
1 lb ground beef (80/20) 1150 calories
1 lb ground white meat turkey, 675 calories (if dark meat and skin are added, the calorie content can be as high or even higher than ground beef)
The calorie count for the whole recipe, by my calculation would fall somewhere between 1500 and 1900 calories.
There are online calorie calculators that you can input your ingredients and the calculator will do the math for you. I don't use them, but I'm pretty sure someone here can provide a link.

as an FYI about Fitday, you have to be careful when you are looking up cooked vegetables. I've found that if you click on "cooked cabbage" (or any other veggie), they automatically give you the calorie count when it's cooked with fat. You have to keep paging through until you find the listings that include whether or not it was cooked with fat.

I usually use a nutritional scale when building my own recipes, and Fitday only as a last resort to estimate, but I've found the numbers to be pretty close. It said 1 medium head of raw green cabbage would be 227 calories. The ground turkey or ground beef would average at 1000 depending on what it is. And I have some minute rice in my cupboard, and it would be 200 calories for 1/2 c. dry which gives 600 for 1 1/2 cups. And I figured the tomato juice at 150, not knowing how many ounces it might be. Thus, my estimate of around 2000. Of course, not knowing exact weights and types of ingredients, that could be an under- or over-estimation.
Thanks for the help! We usually get 8 servings out of this recipe. I use purdue ground turkey (found in meat counter). I never thought to check for another turkey with lower calories! (I definetly will next time!) I use low sodium tomato juice (a 32 oz can). I was hoping for around 300 calories per serving~sounds like it is pretty close! Thanks again!
whoops my calculation was off because i forgot to add the rice in to the recipe! is it brown rice or white rice?
and yes lean ground turkey breast is less in calories!I have found the ground turkey breast by foster farms and also jennie O but the foster farms brand was less calories on the package! that's why I get it instead of just regular ground turkey! my Safeway seems to run out of it quick quickly so I've learned I have to go there on certain days to get it before it's all taken! I'm about to go make a delicious lower calorie tater tot casserole with some ground turkey breast right now YUM YUM!
ok when I did it with the rice in it I came out closer to 1450-1500 cals for the whole thing. using (thedailyplate.com) I also don't use fit day anymore as it seems to be less accurate then thedailyplate but the most accurate way is to check the labels on your food write them all down and add them up! but for veggies a scale is best so you can weigh them!

This is interesting, and shows how much brand variation there can be . I also used the instant rice in my cupboard, a store brand (Walmart's I believe), and it listed 1/2 cup dry as 160 calories. I would never have thought that there'd be that much calorie variation.

This is very true. We eat ground white meat turkey breast when we use it...120 cals per 4 ounces. The generic "Ground Turkey" doesn't necessarily mean it's JUST breast, and comes in on the package at 240 calories in 4 ounces...
