I'm cautiously encouraged by what I've read so far on this site. For over 30 years I've tried to lose weight---so many times, so many programs, so many diets---but I've gained it right back again and sometimes more! However, over the past 3+ years I've gone from ~290 lbs (my highest weight ever) to ~250 lbs by quitting sugary soft drinks and fast food, and eating healthier, whole foods (whole wheat breads and pasta, brown rice, lean meats, olive oil instead of butter, etc.). I've also been eating more fruit and fiber-rich foods, but I buy green leafy veggies, etc., and they often spoil because I don't like them, then I beat myself up about the waste of money and food. (Self-sabotage?)
I can't believe I'm still fighting this weight problem!---I thought I'd be "fixed" by 50! Then, going from bad to worse, I was recently diagnosed as prediabetic. I'm so sick and tired of being fat and sick and tired and depressed. So, here I am yet again, trying yet another weight loss support group. I know there's a healthier, more normal-sized woman inside me somewhere!
Hi, Merry, I am originally from Albuq, (from age 3 to age 37) and I love the area. It is so bike friendly, and outdoorsy. I'm also just got to 50. I'm on low carb, due to fear of developing diabetis, so I eat a lot of butter. These days I am usually in the low carb area. There are a LOT of people here who have made magnificent, amazing transformations, just look at the goal thread pictures! I look there for ongoing inspiration.
I can empathise with the vegetable thing-- I don't hate them, but I am not into cooking them much.
I know there is a vegetable haters thread on this site that sometimes has posts about "hiding" veggies, for instance, in meatloaf. There are also new bags and so on that save veggies in the fridge for longer periods, or, just blanch half in the microwave when you get the veg home, and freeze it.
Trust me there are many people over 50 who are trying to lose. And many who have lost and regained. But you have already made a great start . Congratulations on that. I am with you on the vegies, I buy them and don't get around to using them and they go bad before I can use them Because of that I keep a lot of frozen vegies on hand. Have you tried the steam in the bag vegies. They are quite good .
Hi Merrie. I'm 71 and still fat but much better than I was ten years ago. This is a great site for ideas and support since everyone has been in the same boat. We do have a Low Carb Forum and also a Dieting with Obstacles which includes thread re pre-diabetic and IR challenges.
Yes you are there somewhere - now let's crack the eggshell!
I like vegetables, but I do tend to buy more than I can use. I've found that I can minimize spoilage by buying very limited quantities of the softer veggies, but plenty of those that keep well. So, in a typical shopping trip, I might buy one bunch of red-stemmed chard (The Boy's favorite green), but stock up on winter squash, carrots, broccoli, kohlrabi, leeks, and Chinese or Napa cabbage, all of which keep well. I only buy green beans, zucchini, mushrooms, tomatoes, and red/green peppers if I have a specific meal in mind.
Hello fellow 50+ woman; I just turned 56. I am also hoping this is my last weight loss journey. You have already lost over 40 pounds which is fantastic. I am not a big fan of vegetables or fruit. I am currently on the Metabolic Research Center (MRC) diet which has turned out to be way more expensive that I thought it would be but I needed the accountability of going to a center and weighing in twice a week. You have been doing this on your own so far which is amazing. As you don't like vegetables and are prediabetic I want to tell you about a diet I discovered shortly after signing up at MRC. It is called the Belly Fat Cure by Jorge Cruise. The book is only $10 on Amazon.com On this plan you count sugar and carbs and he makes in simple. You don't eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. He is big on whole grain. There is a forum under other low carb diets. I too thought I would be fit by 50. I've been gaining and losing the same 50 pounds for the last 30 years and the older I get the harder it gets. Good luck to you and welcome to a very supportive group of women.
Your situation sounds similar to mine. I am 54 and have been struggling with this weight thing my whole adult life it seems. And I recently got the prediabetes diagnosis too.
Glad you found this site ~ it is a wonderful place and the people are so helpful and encouraging.
Come join us in the support group section Age 50+ ~ really nice group of people.
