Thumbs up revelation

So last night was really bad. Did good all during the day then got home and literally dove into the dark chocolate. I finished off 3/4 of a hershey's dark chocolate bar which was probably 700 calories by itself. I thought I was done for the night but then later I got in my head that a pb&j sounded phenomenal so not only did I have 1 but 2 and while I was waiting for my toast to be done I slathered some pb on a piece of bread then proceeded to sprinkle it with honey, fold it in half, and shove it in my mouth. I probably consumed a couple thousand in this chocolate/pb&j binge. Then today I'm in the bathroom and I'm pulling up my jeans over my butt when I hear a tear. These were one of my last pairs of jeans that fit me only because they're made of stretchy material. So yeah...my butt and hips have finally outgrown this pair :-( But ASIDE from all this because I don't even feel that bad about it (which is probably bad in itself?) is that I think I've figured out a trigger for the bingeing. I believe it's do to the fact that I didn't have ANYTHING healthy for me to snack on! I didn't go to the store last weekend because I had no money so all week I've been without bananas, apples or any type of salad and vegetables. Apples and bananas being the biggest because I for sure eat one of each every day if I have them. So yeah! I think because I didn't have any fruits and vegetables in the apt I turned to the chocolate and pb! Needless to say I was able to go to the store today and bought myself bananas, 2 bags of apples, 2 bags of salad, green peppers, plus some more milk and eggs. I definitely feel a sense of RELIEF knowing I have all these healthy options for choices and I already feel the pull of the chocolate and pb going away. I don't think I'll EVER let my fridge go empty o these items again!

I really think that one of the basics of dieting should be to never buy or bring home anything that is not on your diet. How did you get the PB&J or the chocolate bar? They were in your house. Carrots are really cheap-- celery is cheap. Lots of very low carb snack foods are cheap--

One really important facet to dieting that I have learned (from experience) is that snacking at all-- no matter what, is a no-no. You either sit down and eat a complete meal at an appropriate meal time or you don't eat at all. None of this "several hundred" calories between meals. Even if you are one of those 6 meal a day people, you need to eat each meal as if it is a meal and not a moment of weakness.

Hope this is helpful.

Good for you for realizing this. My advice is to get the bad foods out of your house so you arent as apt to binge like this. Good luck

Good for you on getting the fruits and veggies to snack on but unless that was a one pound bar you probably didn't do QUITE as badly as you think.

I completely disagree with this. I think if you have planned snacks of on-plan foods, they can be very helpful and keep you from feeling deprived. just my $0.02

3/4 of a Hershey's Dark Chocolate bar is 135 calories. but it sounds like maybe it's not just the exact calorie amount, but the fact that you felt out of control? That's usually how it is for me, anyway.

One thing I like to do in this situation is count the calories I consumed, to the best of my ability. For me personally, it helps to do two things: one, see what damage I actually did (it could be better or worse than you thought), and to keep myself accountable, to make me own it.

As for snacks...I think it depends on the person. Some people need snacks and can handle it really well. Others absolutely can't. I personally am I one snack a day person, because I know I will almost always need a pick me up at 3PM. So I plan accordingly.

I don't agree with no snacking thing. I know that peanut butter and dark chocolate can be a trigger food for me but it was only when I ran out of my fruits and veggies that it became a problem. I barely touched the chocolate or pb in the weeks preceeding this one. I don't WANT to completely cut it out of my diet because if it's ever around me, like at work or at a dinner party, I'll go crazy. I want to learn how to enjoy them both in moderation....because they ARE good for you BUT in moderation. I realize this. I need to learn how to control myself. That's my view on things anyway.
Oh and it was a GIANT hershey's bar...so I know for a fact that I consumed more than 135 calories because 3 blocks is 170 lol

You learned a good lesson thru this experience -- to keep your house stocked up with healthy foods and snacks. I like to have non-salted nuts, yogurt, lots of fruit and veggies; and salad stuff in my house all the time. I keep things that I know that I won't binge on -- I picked fiber bars so I will eat only one; not the whole box. I have nsa chocolate pudding, dark chocolate (in my freezer), and HC for my chocolate tastes.

I also like peanut butter and cheese, but have to make sure that I measure it out too; this takes practice but in time, it does get easier. Anything that I have a big problem with, I avoid bringing home now. I also have 50 calorie rice cakes and 100 calorie popcorn bags for the weekend nights if I want them. Planning really helps ...
