I have so many thoughts and opinions about the segments of this show... I am not sure where to begin.
First of all, that poor little girl. Oh my. I was so sad watching this. I agree that it IS child abuse. How could it not be?
The BBW model: Is it possible that she is in denial about the health effects because of her size?
Miss Plus America: What a great idea! Coming from a back ground of beauty pageants (childhood), I know how rough they can be on someone who is bigger. I remember going to the pageants and looking around for other little girls who were bigger like me. Pretty sad for a 5 year old!
All in all, I really didn't agree with the opinion of the BBW model. At least the plus size pageant girls acknowledged that they were active and lead healthy lifestyles. I really felt like the other model just totally embraced her unhealthy lifestyle of eating and such and was totally promoting it. (IMHO)
I only saw the part about the girl who was being force fed, that was so difficult to watch. I understand that food can be a luxury but just watching her trying to choke down the milk mixture. I agree and see that as child abuse.
Seriously, the BBW model was a joke and so was the weird guy dating here. Liking someone only because they're fat is just the same as liking someone only because they have a hot body. She has so many issues its not even funny. I loved that she was an activist for NAAFT whatever it was which raises awareness for the fair treatment of overweight people but come on! She knows she's not healthy. There's a difference between being proud of the way you look and ignorant. She was ignorant. There's no way to be that size and perfectly healthy. She's found a way to be accepted (by being fat, and reing a risque fat model) and she likes the attention, which is my opinion. I'd be saying the same thing if she was a waif model, 5'11, 95lbs who thought she was perfectly healthy. it's physically impossible. being a healthy weight is about balance. you can be big and beautiful, look at the girls from the pageant! they were gorgeous, OMG, rosie was beautiful! women leading active lifestyles who just so happen to be bigger than normal. intelligent women, not being diluted about the size of their bodies.
it was so interesting to see how our society is becoming "obesigenic", dear God. it's like we're setting ourselves up to fail miserablly. i also thought it was interesting how the ideals of beauty have changed over the lasy 60 years from an appreciation of full figured bodies and their symbol of health and prosperity to the attention given to skinny bodies and their symbol of higher status and class. it's all about perception. and OMG when they talked about the USC study on society's perception of fat men vs. women, it just wasn't fair!!! it was a great taboo, lots of different angles, lots of different sides, lots of different representations of big people.
BTW: TOTALLY CHILD ABUSE!!!! Poor little Khadijahtu...I hope they can get this heinous crime under control outside the cities where it's still being practiced. it's just like female genital mutilation. the things women do, throughout the world, throughout all civilizations, and all time, do to please and attract men...
Calisa- I couldn't agree more! I just couldn't find the words I wanted to use to describe the BBW model. I thought she made herself look as if she lives in a type of "dreamland" where morbid obesity is as desirable as her next twinkie!! I am not trying to criticize her because of her size, I'm criticizing her lack of caring about herself, wellbeing, and future. I think it is very sad.
I didn't see the episode, just read an article about the segment on force feeding in Mauritania. I'd like to see the segment on the BBW model. I don't like the "it's impossible to be perfectly healthy at that weight" argument though bc really, who among us doesn't have habits which make it impossible for us to be "perfectly" healthy, whatever that means. Maybe she is as healthy as the next person, but I didn't see the segment (or her medical records) so I can't say.
I watched the episode and found it very interesting.
I didn't think there was anything "wrong" with the BBW model or her "date". Let's face it, relationships start as a physical connection. When you meet someone, whether we choose to accept it or not, our first reaction is based on physical chemistry. So to me, him finding her attractive and wanting to be with her is no different than a man finding a slim woman attractive. Plus he did say that he does both skinny AND overweight women. To her, being large is sexy. You can't fault someone for feeling that way. I don't know her health history but it is entirely possible to be fat and healthy. Not for too long, but ya know...
I just don't think any of us are in a position to critique someone about being overweight (putting it mildly). We all know how we got to the various sizes we are. WE may not want to be that way anymore and WE may see the fault in our choices and judgements... but that really doesn't give us room to judge others.
Well, except for that wench of a woman that was abusing her kid to get her to drink some effing milk. UGH. I felt so awful for the little girl.
Was anybody else amazed at the quick shot during the Fat people dance of the woman dancing without a bra on? I thought for sure those puppies were gonna pop out of there any minute!
...and OMG when they talked about the USC study on society's perception of fat men vs. women, it just wasn't fair!!!
I recorded it and am watching it now. This part was seriously not fair! For those that didn't see it, here's a summary:
They said women bear the brunt of fatism. A recent study compared the responses to images of fat men and fat women. First they showed the pictures of the men and asked people to write a list of what they thought of him. According to the respondents, he was athletic, chubby, big-boned, cuddly... When participants were shown the pictures of fat women, the responses were she's a fat slob, ugly, gross, smelly, lazy, gluttonous... The only difference was gender.
wow--total child abuse..I try to remember it's a completely different culture--completely foreign to me the motives of the mother were besides wanting the best for the little girl someday..I don't know...I could have just cried watching that segment..wow...
I think some women are big and beautiful. I didn't find the blonde woman on the show attractive at all. If she says she is perfectly healthy--well, I would love a physican to have been on the show quantifying her claims because I didn't buy it.
As for the woman jiggling her jugs about--OMG--the camera moved quickly off that one!
To each their own. For me being that size and happy would not be realistic for myself. But if these women embrace there curves and waist line then I think its awesome. Is it unhealthy yes but if they are comfortable in there skin then Im happy for them

haha, yeah I totally noticed that! For those of you who missed it and have Comcast, it's on OnDemand. I saw this thread and looked it up and watched it right away. I have to say, the segment about the guy who can't walk or hardly move definitely motivated me to get my a** in the gym and appreciate my mobility today!
It made me sick about the children being force fed and had those sticks on their toes. I just about cried. As for the other segments, I guess if the ladies are happy then let them be happy. I guess??????
