Talking Watermelon - help needed

I posted this on the fod thread, but thought I would stick it here too, incase you don't see it over there and can help me out - need I go on. Sorry 3FC for takign up server space onduplicate posts.

I'm trying to encourage my boys to eat more fruit and this morning bought a watermelon as they have previously eaten them at school.

Only problem is I have no idea of the right way to cut it - I sliced it but it had loads of seeds in it, which my youngest boy spent ages picking out leaving him with a reddish mush on his plate for him to eat.

I'm sure there must be an easier way to eat it - did I slice it wrong or did I buy a 'not-so-good' one

If I sliced it right, is there a polite way to deal with all those seeds ?

All advice appreciated - I don't want my sons growing up not really having tasted watermelon because their mum didn't know how to cut it right.

Hi! A foodie question I can answer!

First cut your melon pole to pole.

Cut it into thinnish slices, then have a good look at it.

The pips are in a band about 2/3 the way down, in a ripe watermelon. This gives you 2 options:

Chew and SPIT!!! or,

Using a small knife or a spoon, carve off the flesh above the pip layer. Carve the pip layer into the bin. Then carve off the layer next to the skin. Chop and eat alone or in a fruit salad!

I hope this all makes sense! It is as taught me by the first Mexican lady I ever met, when I was 7 years old. I believe she taught my parents how to add tequila to a melon at the same time!!!!!

Thanks. The boys are going for the spit option, supposedly into a bowl. me I'm chewing.

I like the sound of tequilla and watermelon

Not sure what the difference is between melon and watermelon - apart from water in their name - ha ha ha

How come my cookies keep disappearing so I can't make a reply? Is this my hubby staling them away and not telling me, it seems to happen every time he cleans out the puter.....
