Hi LisaTcan,
This time of year can be the most challenging time of the year for many people...even those who don't have a binge eating issue. I suggest the following:
Decide in advance that you will only have one bite of something that is a trigger. Sure, normally you can't control yourself, but if you really resolve to handle the situation, you will feel a great sense of power.
Better than that though, would be for you to bring food with you to a party. What host doesn't appreciate someone who brings something? It's not always possible, especially if it's a formal event, but most of the time, I would say it is.
Eat before you go and drink lots of water. If you go hungry, you will be more likely to overindulge.
Visualize. I like to visualize myself waking up in the morning and how I will feel if I controlled myself, vs. how low and down I might feel if I lose control.
Exercise!!! If you workout more than usual, it will do several things. It will remind you of your commitment to consistency in this journey AND it will help you rid your body of unwanted calories.
Avoid alcohol completely. Sparkling water is a better alternative...or just plain water or tea. Drinking alcohol is not advised for anyone who is struggling with food issues. Don't hate the messenger....I read this somewhere!
Have a plan. This might require some planning ahead. You might see if you can call or email the host/hostess of a party to find out what will be there in advance. I like to fib a little with this kind of stuff. I might say that I have some food allergies and so I need to be on a special diet. Most people are quite understanding.
Plan to succeed. Yes, you might slip, but I do believe that if you plan on success, it will happen. Be determined and powerful and strong with the food. I think a lot of time, people are tempted beyond control because they think they can never have those special holiday food items again. Well, I think that is just sad. The time is now to go for your goals and think about how happy that will make you, vs. the few bites of food (or more) and how THAT will keep you from having the life you want.
WARNING: I will be talking about specific foods, so please don't read this paragraph if it is a trigger for you:
Ok, now for the actual food: I doubt there won't be a salad in sight (a good item to bring, with low cal dressing). Avoid crutons if they are already in there. I can't imagine there won't be some kind of meat. Remember, a portion is about the size of a deck of cards. There should be things at a party that you can eat. Avoid anything life stuffing, salads loaded with mayo, marshmellow, etc. If you see a ton of deserts, choose one that you really want to try and have one bite only. Enjoy that one bite and pat yourself on the back for having the power.
I hope this wasn't too preachy. I really understand and I hope you will find a way to get through this and persevere!
