Unhappy Caffeine Withdrawl??

So I have cut out soda as part of my diet and now I am getting daily headaches. Is this part of not having caffeine? I didn't drink alot of soda to begin with but these headaches are really bugging me. I work for a neurologist so I have an endless supply of headache and migraine meds but hate taking them. Did anybody else have headaches from lack of caffeine? How did you deal with them and get rid of them?

How long ago did you cut out the soda?

I had the same problem and the headaches seemed to wane away somewhere between a week or two. But the time in between was excruciating! It's probably the caffeine withdrawl though, you're right, or perhaps you are eating a different trigger food?

Well, you could drink coffee?

It sounds like caffeine withdrawal to me. The headaches will go away after awhile. Drinking regular tea or coffee can help ease the symptoms.

if it was caffeine withdrawal then the headaches would have started during the 1st few days....you said you cut out soda, did you cut out anything else recently, or start eating a new food - or even taking a new medication? if I take a medication with a side effect of headaches I end up with them 9 times out of 10!

Did you switch to something else temporarily? Chocolate, hot cocoa, tea, coffee and many over the counter pain medications all have caffine in them. I went through the same thing when I gave up soda. I transitioned to tea for a while but when I went to straight water when the weather warmed up I had horrible head aches for about a week.

I stopped caffiene and diet soda cold turkey prior to my first child and had headaches ranging from mild to pretty bad for about a week. If you've been taking medications for them you can also have 'rebound' headaches after you stop medication, for my DH it happens alot with Aleve.

If you're slowly weaning off them I'd think you'd continue to have headaches as your body keeps adjusting but if you quit completely I'd think you'd have them done and over with by now - obviously not a medical opinion, just a guess

are you drinking enough liquids to replace the soda you have cut out? I would throw back three or five diet cokes without thinking about it. Once I quit, I started getting headaches... I spent a few days thinking it was withdrawal before my husband suggested I was dehydrated.

Also, don't be afraid to take the drugs! There is no reason for you to suffer!

I am not afraid of the meds just afraid of the side effects lol. I started takin a new allergy med but I dont think its the reason. Just think I am sensitive and a big baby I hate headaches they are the worst. I drink plenty of fluids maybe to big of a change all at once. We will see how long they last.

I am currently weaning myself off of coffee and I am getting some pretty nasty headaches.

However, I agree that you would have gotten them the first few days if it was caffeine withdrawal.

The half-life of caffeine is only 4-6 hours. If the headaches were from caffeine, you would have had them starting the next day most likely.

I heard on a radio show some years ago that no matter how much caffeine you've been consuming the withdrawals will end after one week, and having been a coffee guzzler myself I'd say it's about right
