Overall, I have to agree. What a way to turn off the morbidly obese from even attempting an exercise program.
I am also suspicious of the dramatic first week weight losses. So many in the area of 20 lbs in one week. That's a 70,000 deficit which I can't think you can even hit if you were working out 24/7. I suspect the week before they get to the ranch they are only have access to restaurant, high sodium meals and then they get to the ranch and are chugging the water due to all the exercise.
I agree 100%. The show is entertainment only. It shouldn't be used as a guideline for weight loss by any means. They have physicians and ambulances on hand for such reasons.
Caryesings - the weeks in biggest loser are longer than 7 days, I've heard a week can be as long as 3 real weeks.
I am a big sucker for before/after stories...... that is why I like the show. BUT, I am losing interest in it b/c it is not "reality" and it is not practical to apply to the real world. The drama is getting to me too..... really, who would let her stand there and scream at her like that. I am afraid (excuse the violence) my big butt would have to bop her in the nose!
Tom Venuto
Pete Thomas a biggest loser season 2 winner, responded to my critique of the show. see comments @ www.BurnTheFatBlog.com -looks like we may get exclusive interview w Pete to find out what really happens behind the scenes. What do u want me to ask him...? do they really get those losses in 1 week or is there time compression? Does everyone starve for final weigh in? What gets edited that doesnt make final cut? What else?
Now, I did read the reply by Pete (whom I loved on TBL, btw) but it was really lengthy so I didn't want to post here but it can be found on Tom's blog he mentioned in the Facebook status above.
Come on, we all know that it's staged and scripted, right? We also know that no one can lose 10+ pounds a week in a healthy way.
The winner last season (the mom that lost 117 in 16 weeks, I think), do the math - 7.3 pounds a WEEK. Good for her, that she didn't succumb to a major health problem.
I can't stand the way they make people so pathetic, it's really insulting. I've seen 2 or 3 shows, never again.
Well I will say we get users signing up to 3FC asking how to lose like TBL participants or some such thing so it isn't obvious to everyone that the show is for entertainment only. People see it, think it is reality and want to emulate it.
I've never really been a fan of TBL. If you find it inspirational then great, use it for motivation. It just isn't realistic for anyone off of the show. I mean come on, 10 lbs a week? What are they really doing off screen? I'm not implying that they are doing really bad things but I just want to see some one talk honestly about what really goes on.
