Had a Sephora make-over last night (FUN!!!) and afterwards we went to Tim Hortons for coffee. Everyone got donuts and I saw that new Blueberry one but told myself that I don't really need it, especially that fat and sugar just before bed. So......I resisted the temptation and although my mouth almost said "donut" I made myself get a whole grain muffin instead. At 300 calories it wasn't a great choice but better than the donut, I'm sure.
For all you Canadians, if you go to Tim Hortons, what do you order? I'll have to get a nutritional chart and read it. I didn't want to do that when I ordered last night b/c there was a big lineup and I'm sure no one wanted me standing there peering over a chart to see what I could eat. I think the bagel might be more calories than the muffin.
When I looked online at their Nutritional Info the everything bagel at tim hortons has 280 calories but then you have to figure in toppings. Unless you're eating it plain you have to add calories for cream cheese, butter, jelly, etc.
Not sure which blueberry donut you're talking about but according to their website the blueberry cake donut has 260 calories, the blueberry fritter has 330 and the blueberry bloom donut has 230.
Gee, here I thought the muffin would be the lower calories than the donuts. I'm guessing the donut has more fat and sugar tho. I'm going to need to get a calorie chart for them.
Eating out is so challenging. At least at home I can make things I enjoy and they're not loaded with preservatives, fat & sugar. Restaurant food sabotages me all the time.
Ain't that the truth? I used to look forward to meeting up with friends because it would give me a chance to gorge on all those fatty sauces and pasta to my heart's content. Now, I completely dread those lunches/dinners. I just don't like having that conversation with myself "um, what CAN I eat here??" I've decided to just do the best I can with calorie overestimation and eat half of whatever's served.
It's such a pain to try to figure out what to eat and what's best where. I fixed it mostly by really never eating out. I know that's not an option for many, but I found it to be the easiest thing for me. I actually can't remember the last time I went out to eat instead of eating at home.
I usually just get coffee at Tim Horton's... though I haven't been there in a long time (other than the one inside my grocery store).
I like the low-fat muffins in Canada (the ones I've had in the US aren't as good, I don't know what they do to them here!) but it's still more calories than I'd want for baked goods that aren't amazing.
You could always get one or two of their donut holes (I forget what they call them).
The closest T-Ho's to me here in the Boston area is about 45 minutes away on the MA/RI border. So, I never really get to have it. Even when I'm in Canada (which seems to be a lot), my friends prefer Starbucks. So, I will splurge if I am near one since it never happens that often. But those strawberry blossom donuts are my favorite!!!!

A muffin is usually MUCH bigger then a donut and therefore way more calories. I think you got away lucky. Many muffins have 500- 600 calories.

I find I get much more volume, filling power and satisfaction for my calories at home when I do the cooking. I don't know about TiM Hortons'. But when I do dine out, I very often order a veggie egg white omlette. Sometimes with a side salad, dressing on the side. Other times I'll order grilled chicken or salmon. Sauteed veggies. A salad. A hot cup of tea. A diet coke. No reason to go off plan. Just plan it out AHEAD of time. Have a strategy in place beforehand, so you won't be tempted to make a poor choice.
Yeah, the big muffins with more top than bottom that you can buy at Tim's and other places are pretty horrible for you. It's only of those surprising things newspapers like to write about sometimes.. those "10 healthy choices you thought you were making that weren't so healthy at all" articles.
Better to bake your own muffins.
I love Tim Horton's but I rarely go anymore. There's just too much temptation.
I'm not sure what Tim Horton's is but I've never gone to a donut shop myself. If I was just hanging out with people and not eating a meal, I'd just have a drink. If I was going out to eat, I'd try to choose the best option and customize my order as best I could (ie no butter, no mayo, no cheese).
I know what you mean about Tim's. The only thing that keeps me from eating a box of timbits (old fashioned glazed which are one of the worst) is going through the drive through so I can't see all the yummies on the shelves. If my friends want to go there I ask if we can pick up coffee and go sit down in the park or something. I also have the famous Tim's addiction (when I am at work I have at least 3 extra large with two cream and a sweetener-low carb) so going inside would be horrific for my diet.
I was finally back on track until my friend came over with an extra large French Vanilla for me. Being someone who has absolutely NO will power whatsoever, I gulped it before I could tell myself that it was going to send me off the deep end. Needless to say, I went out and bought a 20 pack of timbits...any one else have this problem as well? I am going to start my diet again tomorrow and make my coffee at home (which is TERRIBLE). Good luck and stay strong!
Aaah, Tim Hortons. LOVE it, but its terrible. Unless I am willing to splurge on a muffin or a donut, I generally just get a drink. Unfortunately, there is not much diet-friendly. If I am eating a meal there, I will usually go for soup. Usually when we go though it is just for coffee. If I feel like a sweet treat, I will get a small iced capp made with chocolate milk (150 calories), or a medium mocha with no whip (110 calories).
