Hello everyone. I am frantically writing this as my Dr. thinks I may be type 2 diabetic and I didn't know it. I am 6 weeks pregnant and the thought of my baby having a birth defect because this went untreated has me in absolutle panic and tears. I started testing my sugar last year when my Dr. told me my fasting sugar of 100 was high. There some mornings it would be 157 and 130 but as I lost weight this went down. All last week I was 106, 105, 91, 89 ,etc. for an average of 101. My after meals sugar is always way less then 120. So the problem is my fasting blood sugar. I go for a glucose test tomorrow and an A1C but my concern is if I am diabetic and my fasting blood sugars are around 106 or so could this have caused damage to the baby already?? I know my Dr. will know best but I was hoping someone out there would have experience that could help ease my mind.
Hey, I'm not on this forum, but I'm a nurse on Postpartum/Nursery area and take care of lots of mom with gestational, Type I and Type II diabetes and very rarely is there any problems with the baby. If you are diagnosed and keep your sugars under good control, your baby is less likely to have issues. The main problem is large for gestational babies (which can causes delivery problems for moms and unstable blood sugars for baby in the first 24-48 hours). Moms that have very high blood sugars have some increased risks of birth defects, but it sounds like, from your testing, that is not an issue for you. How many weeks are you? Your doctor could do an ultrasound to check for any problems and most likely will if you are diagnosed with any form of diabetes.
So glad you recognize this possible problem early in the game! Your HA1C results will give you the true story. Murphmitch is right - you should have a healthy baby even if you have Type II as long as you are careful to control your blood sugars.
Murphmitch - I am 6 weeks and 3 days today. After I took my glucose test blood work, when I got in the car I also took my BS on my machine just to see and it was 106. I don't know how accurate a machine is compared to actual lab work but I was told less then 155 after an hour of the glucose drink is good. To my knowledge, the highest my sugars went were 157 back in early June before conception. After lots of crying and panic last night I have come to terms that if I controld my diet, be careful, and make sure my Dr. knows a c-section may be necessary should I have a large baby then I am doing all I can to help the situation.
Ruthxxx - thank you for the response; I am a bit of a worry wart over anything let alone my baby so I will do all I can to keep control. :-)
Actually 140 is the usual cut off for a 1 hour glucose tolerance test to diagnose gestational diabetes, so I don't think you're having any problems, but most docs test everyone at 28 weeks so you'll probably get tested again. Watch your sugar intake and try to eat mostly whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables (not juice), lean meats and lowfat dairy. Sounds like your previous weight loss is bringing your fasting level down, but anyone diagnosed with gestational diabetes is at very high risk of becoming a Type II diabetic in the first five years after childbirth, so it's not something to watch just during your pregnancy.
Thanka Anne. I have been reading that if I do get GD I need to be careful for type II. I never have juice. I have drank water only for 2 years now, and before that it was diet soda and water only. I eat apple slices for fruits, and a variety of veggies. Do you suggest any other fruit choices? I know many have a lot of sugar in the them. I rarely eat simple carbs unless I want some chips or fries and that is rare. It's all whole grains for me now. Doing whatever I can!!
I'm glad it was discovered at an early stage, I can feel your worries since I experienced the same but it wasn't discovered until 14 weeks pregnant.
My doctor at that time told me to do moderate exercise on the stationary bike after meals. I was able to control my glucose levels and avoid insulin with little exercise and a good diet. Only the last month I was on glyburide .5 since it is you vs. the placenta and for more exercise or diet sometimes the sugar goes up. I'm still a type II after giving birth and sincerely my doctor thinks I was a diabetic before getting pregnant but it was untreated since I never visited a doctor. Now I continue with exercise and diet and no medications, my levels are great.
