Default First time for everything, right?

Hi there. My name is Serial (no not really...hah) and I am a "fat chick". i am going to be 24 years old soon and i am definitely more than 100 pounds over weight. I have not weighed myself in some time and I don't think I am ready to just yet. I am currently unemployed and I have decided to use this time to really focus on my happiness and well-being. Weight loss is definitely a big factor of my depression and self consciousness. So this is where I am starting. My resources are limited so the jenny craig, nutrisystem and etc is not an option. but my neighborhood has lots of hills for walking up! I also want to join a gym. My eating habits are awful but I am researching online and finding a "fun & easy" diet that I could shop for and prepare here at home.

I hope this was a good introduction! I really look forward to becoming a FREQUENT member of this community.

Hi Serial and welcome! We look forward to you being a frequent member of this community too.

You're right about the walking. Just get out there and do it. But don't push the hills too hard to start with.

I, and a lot of the other chicks here, count calories. That way you won't end up spending any more on food, because you have to eat anyway. But find what works for you and most importantly, stick with it.

Good luck!

Well maybe you should think of it more of a lifestyle change than a "diet" a lot of us on here including myself are calorie counters focusing on nutrition and more whole foods. You might want to give calorie counting a try because it is free, you eat what you want, and it works!
here are some online calorie counting sites you can use that work for some
sparkpeople
livestrong (the daily plate)
hope this helped!!

i definitely am calling it a "lifestyle change" rather than a diet. i know there are a LOT of things that i need to change and I am working on those. I do realize it is not an overnight thing and it takes time, determination, motivation and discipline. Right now I have no other responsibilities other than myself. i really believe that i owe it to myself to full heartily hit the ground running on this.

thank you for the suggestion. i will definitely research more into calorie counting. Does anyone know of any websites or books that would help me with this?

buy a do it at home walk dvd by leslie sansone. I paid $15 and got 2 workouts on one disc. Its cheaper than a gym and you don't have to leave your house, say if weather is not permitting. Cut out the obviously unhealthy foods, and find healthy replacements, eat 6 small meals instead of 3 large meals. The constant eating of small snacks will boost your motabolism into working faster, thus burning more calories. find a buddy on here who wants similar goals, and make plans with eat other to check in and share what exercise you've done and share your menus. I also am 24 and am looking to lose 100 lbs.

I also like calorie counting. Food scales (which I still need to buy) and good measuring cups are helpful. There are many different sites out there to log your food, but for me, I write mine down on a dry erase board thats on the fridge. I keep track of things better that way, and I dont forget to write it down, since its right in the kitchen. You just have to find the way that works best for you

I also like the site, www.mapmyrun.com you can map out whatever distance you want, starting where ever you want. I have a mile mapped out from my house. I walk/run it, and love it. There are a couple of hills in my area too, and today was the first time I ran one of them - usually I'd walk.

You CAN do this, and this website is an awesome resource! Glad you found it!

Lizzyg - thank you SO much for the words of encouragement! i really appreciated it. I'm going to check out the site and map out a good walk now. the areas around my house are full of hills so i prob couldnt do a mile right off the bat...im thinking some shorter walks a couple times a day.
