When a videotape kicks your butt

  • So my new roommate and I were going to do some exercise videos last night. We picked Ab Assault and Bun Buster.

I thought the ab video would be hard, but the lower body video would be easy. I thought I was all tough because I've been weight lifting 2-3 times a week, always doing squats, lunges, leg extension, etc. etc.

The Bun Buster video kicked my butt! I'm so sore! The ab video seemed mild in comparison. Next time I'll have to go with her suggestion of pilates. Ha ha ha.
  • I always underestimate workout videos. I got Jillian Micheal's 30 day shred, which has three 20 minute workouts that get progressively difficult. I figured I'd do the first one as a warm up for the others...boy was I wrong. I was sweating and panting and took way more '5 second breaks' than suggested...
  • i also am doing one of jillians tape I am working up to the shred. You definatley realize just how out of shape you are and that you dont have such great balance and co-orination. at least that is it for me...
  • Jillian's 30 day shred kicked my a**!!! I'm thinking to myself when I started that "it's only 30 minutes, it can't be that intense..."

    BOY WAS I WRONG!
  • Keep your own pace!
I have learned through watching SO MANY different workout gurus that you have to keep your own pace throughout in order for it to be most affective.

I do my workouts in my own private time because trying to do it with other people just means being razzed about NOT keeping up or NOT doing what THEY are doing (THEY being the people in the tape who have been doing it for the past 6 years straight).

I know that beating myself into the ground with the tapes is just going to make me give up easily. I go at my own pace, when they start doing it faster, I stay at doing it slow, when they start throwing their arms in the air, I keep mine chest level, etc.

So, I've learned and listened that when they start bouncing around like super balls in those videos - keep the pace that works!!!!
One thing I really can't stand about them is they are not leveled, a beginner workout should not start slow and then have you jumping up and down off the floor in the middle, that's something that needs to be built up to over the course of several weeks or months. They don't consider the fact that we are not all super fit size 4's. They don't consider that we are terribly out of shape and it hurts us to throw our flab around like that.

    I have spoken!!
