Default Hip Pain

I am having some hip pain from jogging and I am wondering if any of you have experienced anything like this before and might know what it is. I have a doctor's appointment in two weeks, but was curious about what advice experienced exercisers might have!

When I was 23 I started jogging when I weighed 252 pounds and had great success with it (along with a healthy lower calorie diet, of course). Now that I'm in my 30's I have tried to start up again (I am around 225 now, and my jogging is VERY slow) but everytime I start I can't continue because of my hips.

When I'm jogging I feel fine, but later when I get up from sitting or resting, my hips hurt when I walk or stand. After I warm up a little, the pain mostly goes away, but comes back and takes days to go away. It's a "sore" feeling, not a sharp stabbing pain or ache.

Also, the pain is in a weird spot. It is on the side of my body at the top widest part of my hip before it curves up into my waist (I am very hourglass shaped).

I mostly get the pain from jogging, but any kind of movements I am not used to, long hikes, or even standing for long periods of time can set it off as well. It can more than a week to finally stop hurting.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice would be appreciated. I LOVE jogging, and walking is just not as fun for me! Thanks!

I have experienced something similar to this i think. For me the pain was right on the top sort of "ridge" of my right hip, right on the bone, on the part furthest out away from the centre of my body (if that makes sense). What had happened to me was that i had injured the muscles there badly (had someone walk into it with the edge of a cast iron industrial sized baking tray) and while it was inflamed I had favoured the opposite side of my body. But this meant that because it was such a large muscle and took a while to heal, the muscle there actually weakened, causing on going pain. To solve the problem I had to simple strengthen the muscles again through physio and cycling If its something like what I had, you should have no problem jogging after a while, i've done a quarter marathon and jog regularly since going to physio

I had pain like that in my hip when I first started running. I took some time off from running and did other cardio in the gym instead. During the time that I took a break from running, I began strength training and probably significantly strengthened all of my leg muscles. I also invested in a good pair of running shoes--went to a store where they watched me walk and suggested shoes that would correct the problems with my gait.

I'm not sure if it was the shoes, the strength training, or both, but since returning to running, I haven't had a problem with hip pain. Knee pain, ankle pain, and a sore hip flexor, but no pain on the side of my hip.

But it's also good that you are going to see your doctor about it. I'd recommend seeing a specialist in sports medicine, not just your general practitioner.

I was going to suggest to look at the wear on your sneakers and shoes it could be your feet. A lot of the time our pain is referal pain. Kinda like a tooth ache it may hurt in the back of your mouth but it is really the front tooth. If it looks like the wear is uneven in yur shoes make an appointment with a foot doctor a good set of orthodics can work wonders.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I'll definitely check into getting some new shoes and I have really been needing to start weight training, so this is just the push that I need!
