Default Is Glucose 101 something to be concerned about?

This week I took part in an annual health assessment at work. I had looked forward to it because I expected big improvement in cholesterol and, well, really everything.

Well, my fasting glucose came back as 101. They recommend that I see my doctor. Since normal is 70-99, 101 does not seem too bad. But maybe it is.

Is this something to be concerned about? I know that no one here can give medical advice but I thought some of you may have had a similar experience.

Thanks!

Could be a sign of prediabetes...something to be concerned about, but not go crazy with worry. Definitely go to your doctor to be checked out.

I know in the old days, 100 was considered normal, and doctors weren't worried about blood sugars until they got upwards toward 120 or more, but a lot of the measures that were considered normal in the past, are now considered warning signs, at least if there are other factors such as high blood pressure, or being (even mildly) overweight.

I would agree that you should bring it up at your next doctor's visit (assuming you have at least an anual checkup), but I don't think it's anything you need an emergency appointment for - I'm sure some of our nursing members will have a more informed opinion.

Well, firstly it has to be a repeatable result, so it should definitely be rechecked. The thing about blood sugar levels is there is no black and white division between normal and abnormal. Like most blood tests that measure quantities of something, there will always be people in the normal range that have disease, and people in the abnormal range who don't.

I would definitely share the information on your next visit with your healthcare provider. He/she may do a fasting check to see what it says then. But it's not something you need to make a special appointment for at this time.
