Angry So MAD! Im done walking outside! I cant believe this!

Im sorry to be posting so many new posts, this will be the last one for a while.

I AM SO FRIGGING MAD! It happened again. Went walking outside at lunch, had tons of energy, was even able to do some short spurts of running, yes running at 274 lbs! Then it hit me, half way through, stomache pains, I had to go to the bathroom again! I had to cut my walk short and rush to the nearest bathroom, praying the whole way that I could hold it.

I even ate 1/2 apple instead of lunch before walking so it would not happen. I guess its the gym for me only. This makes me so frigging furious I could just cry. The one time I find something that works for me , ends up making me quit cause I cant keep from ****ing my frigging pants.

Im Done. This is so ridiculuous I just want to cry.

When I am working out even at the gym, I need to go #1. I usually hold it till I get home, but don't always manage, and I stop and go, and continue my training, otherwise I am not able to do the training right. I know how you feel. It is frustrating. From time to time I decided to wear a garter belt, and when I have to go it is a nightmare getting it down. Don't let it go over you, just continue the training afterward.
My hubby though runs for #2...so even worse.
If it is bad though, you need a doc.
The training works your abdominal muscles, that cause contractions (or massages) of the intestines, so your digestion goes more smoothly. That is why kids, babies are rubbed on the back (to burp) or on the tummy after they ate too much (to go potty)

First, I think you need to go to a doctor to get evaluated for irritable bowel syndrome or other gastrointestinal problems...that kind of urgency from walking isn't normal (it'd be different if you were running marathons). Especially because you mentioned being constipated in a previous thread on this topic, it's something to consider. There are things you can do to help that might eliminate your problem, but without talking to your doc, you'll never know what they are. Exercise can be an IBS trigger for some.

Second, in the interim, why not start planning your walks around a stop halfway through? When considering your route, plan a stop somewhere you know has a restroom about halfway through. That way, you can take care of your business and continue on your way.

I was thinking the same thing as manda. But she said it so well, I'll just say, "Ya, what she said."

yah what they said!! you can't give up over poo!!! lol ok that sounds heartless but you can't! i think a planned stop half-way thru sounds like the best solution -- or what about a treadmill at home? or the walk away the pounds videos again at home?? that way it won't matter so much! but i definitely agree with seeing a DOCTOR, that's just not normal !!!

Trazey - ha, that made me think of my favourite Scrubs episode with the 'Everything depends on poo' song.

I agree with all the other suggestions about doctor's, mid-walk comfort stop. Who know? Maybe Knowing there's a half way break might help things settle down a bit. No, I'm Not saying you're imagining it but getting nervous doesn't help our insides, vicious circle.

Also, don't know about anyone else but when I eat apples I might as well eat depth charges ~ and therefore do, if I need to; but I find apples one of the fasting moving foods at the best of times.

I have IBS, and even a walk around Walmart puts me in the same position. The only exercise that rarely seems to "speed things along" in my digestive tract is swimming.

I have gone through a "what's the use" phase (in which I avoided going anywhere for fear I'd find myself stuck without access to a bathroom). Finally, though I decided that unless I wanted to stay chained to a restroom, I had to learn ways to get my digestive tract under as much control as I can manage, and learn to minimize the risks as best I can.

It's taken alot of time and experimenting to find what works, and it's still a bit of an "adventure," at times, but it's better than being slave to the restroom.

Talk to your doctor about the symptoms (it definitely does sound like IBS) and behavioral and diet changes that can help, as well as medications. I can control my symptoms fairly well with diet and behavior changes (I take enough meds), but with diet - different foods are different triggers for some folks, and can involve complicated variables. A food, behavior, and symptom journal can help you find your own patterns. Sometimes it means choosing or avoiding certain foods (or timing them, correctly) and/or timing exercise or making adjustments (walking on a treadmill, rather than in the neighborhood - or even just walking around your own block, or up and down the same street - so that you can take a potty break, if you have to).

Yeah, it's an inconvenience - but only that. It's not an insurmountable obstacle unless you let it be.

Oh I do agree that you should see a doc bcse it does snd more serious than simply having to go when you walk.
and most parks have a rest stop or something and knowing its there will help. or even a restaurant or store even that you can swing into if need be.

Everyone else has already given such great advice, but I wanted to chime in on the apples.

I used to teach preschool and after naps, we'd have a snack and send the kids out into our fantastic playground/yard. If we had apples for snack, within 15 minutes we'd have at least half the kids coming up to us with the panicked look in their eyes. "I have to go to the bathroom! Right! Now!!!!!"

So apples might not be the best choice pre-workout.

I do hope you get it worked out and continue to exercise. I just started running and I love how alive it makes me feel.

Apples are a bad choice! They are fiber rich and I have them for breakfast. I have a girlfriend who is on a weight loss program and she has IBS. She had lunch and we got up to walk around the mall. Not even halway in, she whispered she had to find a bathroom immediately. She couldn't even finish walking with me so I walked alone and went home. She said when she has to go, she has to go NOW. I think you should see your doctor. That is what it sounds like but in the meantime avoid apples!

I wouldn't necessarily avoid apples or other high fiber foods (that can set you up for constipation, the other evil side to IBS).

Increasing dietary fiber (gradually) is one of the most common treatment suggestions for IBS. I've found that I have to walk the dietary fiber tightrope - too little fiber (or too little water with my fiber) and I've got painful constipation, and too much fiber or too much of certain fruits or veggies and I've got diarrhea, abdominal cramping and/or normal but "urgent" issues.

Apples have been a vital tool for me, in gaining control over my IBS symptoms, which is why I wouldn't suggest avoiding them entirely (but some "timing" may have to be considered). I usually eat one apple (or other high water/high fiber fruit) a day, usually as a bedtime snack, because that puts me "on schedule" for early morning. Not everyone has the same timing, or predictability of timing, so you have to experiment to find what works for you.

Yes, it feels really weird to be timing specific foods in order to be able (to an extent) control or "schedule" your toilet habits. With moderate to severe IBS you can rarely completely control your digestive system, but there are a lot of tools and techniques that can help (there's support groups online too, with a lot of information), and as inconvenient as it is - it's a lot less inconvenient than not having a restroom handy when you need one.

omg that made me laugh.

however, i'm sorry that happened to you again! Argh, must be sooo frustrating.

I do agree about the apples - my stomach and apples don't go together. Very bad things happen!

I would agree with trying a different snack, and making a planned stop halfway through. What do you think of that?

I didn't mean avoid apples entirely. She should avoid them before she goes walking if this is a problem for her.
