OK probably not theeeee healthiest, but not bad!!! some fibre at least
So i buy a box of Mini Wheats - cinnamon streudel flavour - and OMG !!!
you can have 25 squares for 190 cals, so i sat there and counted out 25 into individual baggies and put the baggies back in the box LOL that'll keep 'em fresh too!
I take a bag to work and leave it on my desk as a quickie little nibble of something and it's eliminated the "oh I'll grab a few hershey's kisses from so and so's candy dish" as it's got a little sweet and some crunch!
Sounds yummy!!! Right up my alley in fact. And I'm sure for most people it WOULD be a great find. But............
not for me, I have big issues with cereal. Definitely a "binge" food for me. It sends me right into "shovel" mode. I have this strange need to shovel it in my mouth and a quick rate.
All cereals, with the exception of Fiber One cereal is off limits to me.
Rockinrobin, I'm glad you mentioned that. I cannot, even when I wasn't actively trying to lose weight, ever have cereal in my house. I don't buy it. I can demolish an entire huge box of cereal in a matter of hours. I don't really binge on any other foods but cereal is a huge weakness of mine. I don't even touch it at my parent's house when I'm visiting, either, because it's just too easy to eat so much of it.
As for keeping a "perfect" snack around, I'm all for that. Since I'm off grains and dairy, I do eat more fat than a lot of people do so my favorite snack is almonds. I buy them raw and toast them myself. I do a big batch on the weekends and every week I do different spices on them. This week, I have garlic chili almonds. I measure them out 1/4 cup into snack baggies so I can throw a baggy in my purse in the morning and have my snack right there. I also pack a "drive-home" snack to eat in the car so that I don't stop for fast food on the way home from work. This is a trick I learned from a coworker who always has a carrot and an orange in her purse that she eats on her commute.
I adore all types of nuts. Unfortunately, they are a trigger for me. I don't bring them into the house anymore. Peanut butter is the closest thing to nuts that I can keep in the house.
For me, the best snack I've found is caramel rice cakes. Low cal and fat, but strongly flavored. I'm glad I discovered them... sweets are a weakness of mine, and I was settling for having little 100 cal packs of chocolate pretzals around the house. That wasn't working out so well... I went through a whole box in one day, one bag at a time, simply because they were available. But the rice cakes don't make me crave them as much, but still taste good.
I was pretty certain I wasn't alone in the "can't do cereal" group. LOTS of people do have issues with it. Weird.
Can't do almonds as a snack either. Stopping at a moderate portion of the yummy, healthy, yet oh so caloric morsels is not a satisfying snack for me. The only way I can safely do almonds, is slivered in a salad.
Can't do those caramel rice cakes either, although they do taste good. 1 servings worth is not satisfying to me. It's like I didn't even eat anything. Leaves me clamoring for more. So then it would quickly turn into 2 servings and 3.......
My snacks have to taste good, leave my tummy full and satisfied. Not clamoring for more and more and more..... I've got to stick to veggies, fruits and the such. Just the way it is.
Carrots & celery with hummus for me, string cheese is another favorite, Ezekial bread with natural peanut or almond butter. I like to have something with fiber and protein. It really satisfies me. Can't have anything like pretzels or rice cakes.
I was exactly the same way about cereal, until I started bringing it home and putting it in serving size baggies (we don't eat it in bowls - usually we mix with a tbsp of dried fruit and make lower-cal trail mix). All of a sudden, the idea that I have to open another bag, which I know is X amount of calories, is enough to make me NOT eat the cereal.
I was also this way about nuts, but I bought a jar of the Emerald cocoa almonds, put them in individual serving size baggies immediately when I got home (with gum in my mouth to prevent popping them as I packaged) and now I can keep them in the house no problem.
A BOX of cereal or a whole thing of nuts? Entirely different story, for me. I will binge almost every time.
That sounds like a great idea. Sometimes I just want a snack and if the baggies are ready to go - I will stick to only 1.
I need to do that with my coco almonds too.
It's funny how we all have different trigger foods. Cereal doesn't bother me, nor does peanut butter. But put a box of big cheez-it's in the house and they will be gone - portioned or not.
I know some people try to do everything in moderation, but there are some things that I have just crossed off the list of what works for me. 1 cookie is too many because 1 dozen is not enough!!
